Vila Nova de Milfontes
The urban beach of Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the right bank of the Mira, with calm shallow water that makes it the best option for families with young children and for beginner SUP and kayaking. Blue Flag, a five minute walk from Forte de São Clemente, free, with one warning about the outgoing tide current.
Praia da Franquia is not the beach where you go to catch waves. It is the beach where you teach a kid to swim, where you bring grandparents without negotiating cliffs, where you spend a full afternoon without shouting over the Atlantic shorebreak. It sits on the right bank of the Mira river, in the centre of Vila Nova de Milfontes, and that location explains everything: an estuary instead of open ocean, calm shallow water, a seabed that slopes gently.
Official address: R. dos Medos, 7645-281 Vila Nova de Milfontes. In practice, it is a five minute walk from the historic centre, dropping down from Rua António Mantas towards the river. By car you will find free street parking in the surrounding blocks, but from 11am onwards in August, forget it. Walk down from the square by the Forte de São Clemente: ten minutes, river views, no traffic dance for a parking space.
Franquia is a Blue Flag beach, which here means what it should mean: monitored water quality, lifeguards in summer, clean access points, toilets, showers. This is the village's urban beach, with everything that brings in convenience and in crowds.
This is the essential point. Praia da Franquia is shielded from Atlantic swell by the geometry of the estuary itself. The result: gentle incoming tide, water noticeably warmer than any open ocean beach in the Alentejo, and a depth that increases without surprises. Parents with young children get something here that is almost impossible along the rest of the Vicentine coast: kids in the water without parents glued to the shoreline in panic.
One serious caveat, though: the Mira has tidal currents. On an outgoing tide the current pulls toward the rivermouth, that is, out to sea. It is not dramatic in general, but if your child does not swim confidently, keep them near the shore or in marked areas. Ask the lifeguard about the tide before letting anyone swim further out. The locals all do this, even if they pretend they do not.
This is where Franquia beats the surrounding ocean beaches. With flat water and an estuary's width, it is the natural base for stand-up paddle, kayaking, beginner sailing, and windsurfing. Operators on the sand rent boards and kayaks by the hour during the high season, with prices from roughly 10 to 15 euros per hour depending on equipment. Check rates directly, as boards change vendors and seasons.
Practical advice: if you want SUP in ideal conditions, go early, before 11am. The northerly wind picks up by midday, and paddling against it on the river is an exercise in humility.
The sand stretches wide at low tide and narrows dramatically at high tide. In August, at the 2pm high tide, it gets packed. So:
July and August are peak intensity, with the absolute crunch around 15 August. June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, sand still hot at 6pm, half the crowd. By October, the beach is essentially yours, and the sunset over the rivermouth is worth bringing a jacket for. For an honest look at the village outside the holiday calendar, read our Milfontes off-season guide.
If you carry a camera, the estuary catches a particular light at golden hour, with the Forte de São Clemente cut against the sky. Our photographic guide to the Mira estuary helps with planning the right hour.
Praia da Franquia does not compete with Praia do Malhão or Almograve for Atlantic drama. That is not its job. Its job is a civilised swim two steps from the village café, a child's first kayak lesson, a stress-free family lunch. The price tag is €: it is free, public, with paid services optional. Hours: it is a public beach, but lifeguard supervision runs typical summer hours, 9am to 7pm during the bathing season. In May or October, be aware that a red flag with no lifeguard is possible.
If you are heading to Milfontes in June, consider combining a day at Franquia with the FEI-TUR 2026 tourism fair: morning at the beach, afternoon at the fair. Additional accessibility information and beach condition updates can be confirmed on the Visit Portugal portal.
