Arcos de Valdevez is the kind of municipality that rewards you for leaving the main road. Stretched along the Vez river, between mountain ranges that border the Peneda-Gerês National Park, this is a territory of granite, goat and terraced hillsides, and one of the most genuine gateways to Portugal's only national park.
What defines Arcos de Valdevez
The town itself is compact and walkable: the bridge over the Vez, the Igreja da Misericórdia, the pillory in the municipal square and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa mark the historic centre. But the real draw is the wider municipality. Sistelo, about 20 minutes by car, is known as the "Little Tibet" of Portugal for its socalcos, agricultural terraces dating back to the 16th century, classified as a National Monument in 2017. The Passadiços do Sistelo offer a 2 km walkway, but those wanting a longer hike can follow the Ecovia do Vez, linking villages, water mills, medieval bridges and espigueiros (stone granaries) across 32 km.
Goat, cachena beef and vinho verde
If there's one thing Arcos de Valdevez does better than almost anywhere else in Minho, it's goat. Cabrito mamão da serra, suckling goat raised in the Soajo and Peneda mountains, with IGP certification, is served at dozens of restaurants across the municipality, especially during the "Arcos à Mesa" food event. Cachena beef, from a small-framed indigenous breed with impressively large horns, is another local speciality, often served with arroz de feijão tarreste. Pair everything with the region's vinho verde.
When to go and how long to stay
Two to three days is ideal to cover the town, Sistelo and at least one foray into Gerês via the Porta do Mezio entrance. In summer, the river beaches along the Vez, like Poço das Caldeiras near Sistelo, are the perfect afternoon plan. Spring is the best season for hiking, with the terraces at their greenest and the mountains free of July's heat. The Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Peneda, in early September, is a centuries-old pilgrimage and one of Minho's most striking festivals.
