Guided Viewpoint Hikes in Arcos de Valdevez
Stay Sistelo runs guided hikes of 3 to 5 hours along the Ecovia do Vez, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, combining wooden walkways, medieval bridges, and a local product tasting included in the price. From €25 per person, with regular departures from Sistelo.
Arcos de Valdevez has nine official viewpoints, a network of 28 signposted trails, and a local operator who knows every bend of the River Vez like the back of their hand. Stay Sistelo runs guided hikes that combine wooden walkways, medieval bridges, natural pools, and the terraced hillsides that earned Sistelo a spot among Portugal's 7 Wonders in the Rural Villages category.

The Experiences on Offer
Vez River Hike: the riverside walk
This is the shorter option and, in my view, the best way to get your first taste of the area. It runs 3 to 4 hours, costs €25 per person, and meets on Rua de Porta Cova in Sistelo. The route starts beside the valley, where the famous Sistelo agricultural terraces come into view. If you have already read our guide to the Sistelo terraces, you will recognise the landscape, but having a local guide changes everything: there is context about farming techniques, about who still works those slopes, about the real life of the village.
You cross a medieval bridge to enter the Ecovia do Vez, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The path follows well-maintained wooden walkways, with stops at natural pools where you can swim in summer. June to September is ideal for that. The vegetation is dense: strawberry trees, beeches, birches, and oaks form a green canopy over the trail.
The best part? The finish. The hike ends back in Sistelo with a tasting of local products included in the price. Smoked meats, mountain cheese, cornbread. The kind of reward your legs deserve.
Sistelo Hiking Trail: the fuller version
For those wanting more, the Sistelo Hiking Trail costs €30 per person and lasts 4 to 5 hours. The meeting point is at Largo Visconde do Rio Vez in Sistelo, with two variants on different schedules:
- Sistelo Hiking (Wednesdays and Fridays, 9am and 3pm): a guided village tour passing the Viscount of Sistelo's Castle, the Roman bridge over the Vez, and the traditional granaries. If you are interested in granaries and medieval bridges, this is the variant to pick. You then climb the hillside to a shepherd's refuge to learn about mountain life.
- Sistelo Walkways Hiking (Mondays, 10am and 1pm): includes minibus transport to Arcos de Valdevez, a stop at the 13th-century Vilela medieval bridge, then the walkway trail through the Sistelo valley past waterfalls and the River Vez.
My recommendation: if you can only do one session, choose the morning. The light is better for photos at the viewpoints, and the heat has not kicked in yet, especially between June and September.
Viewpoints You Should Not Miss
Arcos de Valdevez has viewpoints scattered across the whole municipality. The most relevant ones for hikers doing these trails are:
- Miradouro dos Socalcos (Porta da Cova, Sistelo): the iconic view over the agricultural terraces. This is where everyone takes that photograph you have already seen.
- Miradouro da Estrica (Sistelo): reached via PR 27, a circular trail of 4.4 km taking about 2 hours. Easy difficulty, well-marked and fully operational.
- Miradouro do Castelo da Miranda: connected to the Lima Route, with panoramic views over the valley.
- Miradouro de Cabana Maior and Miradouro do Coto Velho (Soajo): for those extending their visit to the north of the municipality.
If you want to combine viewpoints on your own with free short trails, check our guide to Arcos de Valdevez on a budget, which covers trails and river beaches at no cost.
Practical Tips
- Footwear: hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip. The wooden walkways can be slippery when damp.
- Clothing: layers. Even in summer, mornings in Sistelo can be cool. Bring a light windbreaker.
- Bring: water (at least 1.5L per person), sunscreen, a hat, and swimwear in summer for the natural pools.
- Minimum participants: 2 people. If travelling solo, contact Stay Sistelo directly to check whether there is an existing group you can join.
- Getting to Sistelo: by car from Arcos de Valdevez it is roughly 15 minutes via EM530. There is no regular public transport, so a car is essential.
- Parking: free near the meeting point in Sistelo.
