Manteigas: Guided Glacial Valley Hikes with Estrela Outdoor
Estrela Outdoor runs guided hikes along the Rota do Glaciar (PR6 MTG) in Manteigas, 17 km through one of Europe's largest U-shaped glacial valleys. With a local guide, included transport, and a reading of the landscape that transforms the walk.
There's a real difference between hiking the Zêzere Glacial Valley on your own, phone as a map, half-guessing if you're still on the trail, and doing it with someone who knows every contour line, every point where the valley shifts character. Estrela Outdoor exists for exactly this: a nature tourism operator based in Manteigas that runs the Rota do Glaciar (PR6 MTG) with professional guidance, personalised transport, and a reading of the landscape no brochure can replicate.
Who Is Estrela Outdoor
The company was born during lockdown, a partnership between three local operators, Sabores Altaneiros, Astro Estrela, and Trilhos e Cumes, who'd been working the serra independently for years. They merged into a single brand covering climbing, mountaineering, orienteering, astronomy, gastronomy, and hiking. The Rota do Glaciar is their most popular experience, and it's easy to see why: this is one of the largest U-shaped glacial valleys in Europe, a finalist for Portugal's 7 Natural Wonders.
What to Expect on the Glacier Route
The full circuit covers about 17 km and takes roughly 6 hours. It starts in Manteigas, climbs along the Zêzere River to Covão d'Ametade, and returns via Vale da Candeeira. Altitude ranges from 755 to 1,989 metres, meaning you cross three distinct altitudinal zones in a single day. The vegetation changes dramatically: oak groves give way to juniper and heather scrub, then to the open, mineral landscape near the plateau.
The guide makes the biggest difference in the first kilometres, when the valley is still narrow and the landscape hasn't revealed what it's hiding. It's from the moment the valley opens into its U-shape, when you physically understand the force of ice that carved all of it, that the walk becomes something else. If you've read our guide to the glacial valley hike, you know what I mean. But having someone point out the erosion marks on polished rock and explain how the lateral moraines formed is a different experience entirely.
Covão d'Ametade: The High Point
Covão d'Ametade is, without question, the strongest moment of the route. It's a natural amphitheatre surrounded by rock walls where the Zêzere is born, or nearly so. Water runs between granite blocks and, depending on the season, it can be cold enough to take your breath away if you dip your feet in. Morning light here is incomparably better than afternoon light, anyone interested in photographing the glacial valley should push for an early start.
The return via Vale da Candeeira is more physically demanding, with significant climbs, but it offers a completely different perspective of the valley, from above, the scale of what the glaciers did is even more striking.
Practical Tips
- Footwear: Proper hiking boots with good grip are non-negotiable. The terrain is uneven with rocky stretches where trainers won't cut it.
- Clothing: Even in summer, bring an extra layer. The temperature difference between Manteigas (755m) and the highest point (nearly 2,000m) can be 10-15°C. In winter, expect serious cold.
- Water and food: Carry at least 1.5L of water per person and energy snacks. There are no refill points on the trail.
- Best season: Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October). Summer gets hot on the lower stretches; winter can bring snow to the upper sections, adding difficulty but also beauty.
- Fitness level: Moderate difficulty. You don't need to be an athlete, but you need to be comfortable walking for several hours. The 17 km circular version doesn't forgive those who don't walk regularly.
Beyond the Valley
Manteigas has more to offer than the glacier route. The Burel Factory is right in town and worth a visit before or after the hike, it's the best way to understand how wool and the mountain have been connected for centuries. And if you want to explore the serra in a different register, the Snow Wells trail is a shorter but equally interesting alternative with a historical context that surprises most people.
How to Book
Estrela Outdoor can be reached by phone (960 470 889) or email ([email protected]). Book in advance, especially for spring and autumn weekends, which fill up fast. The meeting point is arranged directly, usually in central Manteigas, with transport included to the trailhead. Confirm current pricing and group conditions directly with the operator.
An honest note: this trail can be done without a guide. It's signposted and well-documented. But the difference between going alone and going accompanied isn't about safety, it's about understanding. When someone explains that a polished rock carries thousands of years of glacial pressure on its surface, the valley stops being beautiful and becomes extraordinary.
