Kayaking the Mira Estuary in Vila Nova de Milfontes
Areias do Mar has been paddling the Mira estuary since 2010, launching from Praia da Franquia with tour times set by the day's tide. The Mill Tour costs 20 euros and takes about 2.5 hours, perfect for first-time paddlers.
The Mira estuary doesn't reveal itself well on foot. You see it from the viewpoints, photograph it from the promenade, but you only really understand it once you're sitting inside it, at water level, letting the tide decide where you go. That's what took me to Areias do Mar, the kayak operator based at Praia da Franquia since 2010.
Who Areias do Mar Is
Areias do Mar is a licensed tourism activity company (RNAAT 146/2011), based right on Praia da Franquia, on the village side of the river. It's not a large-scale operation with a fleet of buses and branded uniforms. It's a small team, reachable directly by phone or email, that knows the river in detail because they've worked it for over a decade. That shows in how they adjust tours to the day's tide instead of pushing everyone onto the same fixed slot.
The tours on offer
There are three main options, all departing from Praia da Franquia:
- Mill Tour: 5 km, about 2.5 hours, 20 euros per person. No transport needed, you leave and return to the same point.
- Casa Branca Pier: 13 km, about 4 hours, 40 euros per person for groups of 4 or more, 50 euros if fewer. Return transport included.
- Odemira: 31 km, about 7 hours, 60 euros per person, minimum 4 people. Transport included.
For those who want to paddle independently, they also rent kayaks by the hour: from 10 euros for 30 minutes on a single kayak, or 15 euros for a two-seater. There are half-day and full-day rates, plus discounts for larger groups on request.
Which one to pick
If you've never paddled before, the Mill Tour is the one. Five kilometers sounds like nothing, and with the tide in your favor it genuinely glides by with little effort, on a stretch of river that's wide and sheltered from the wind that hammers the open coast. It's also the only tour that skips the transport logistics, which simplifies everything.
The Casa Branca Pier tour is a different conversation: four hours of paddling, further upriver, where the estuary narrows between reed beds and the scenery shifts from Atlantic beach to something closer to a proper river, with herons and avocets lifting off as the kayak passes. That's the one I'd recommend to anyone with reasonable fitness who wants to see the Mira properly, not just its mouth.
What to expect, step by step
You meet at Praia da Franquia, where the team hands out life jackets (mandatory, no exceptions) and gives a quick paddling briefing for first-timers. The kayaks used are sit-on-top models, more stable and easier for beginners than closed kayaks, and practically impossible to capsize on calm water like this estuary.
Departure is always timed around the tide. This is the detail that matters most, and what sets this operator apart from a straightforward equipment rental: tour times shift day to day, adjusted so you paddle with the current on the way out and, ideally, on the way back too. So when booking, always ask what the scheduled time is for that specific day, because it isn't fixed.
There are stops along the way to rest your arms and take in the surroundings. It's in that quiet, away from any boat engine, that you understand why this works better by kayak than on a motorized sightseeing trip: you hear the wind in the reeds, you spot Forte de São Clemente up on the cliff, and the water shifts color as the light shifts, something photographers already know well, as covered in our photography guide to the Mira estuary.
The best time of day
The morning session is better. That's not just opinion: there's less wind (the afternoon wind on this stretch of Alentejo coast is notorious and makes paddling harder), the water is smoother, and the low light makes the river look like a different place, gold instead of the metallic blue of midday. If you get to choose, ask for the earliest slot available.
What to bring
- Swimwear under your clothes, because you will get wet, guaranteed
- A hat with a strap (loose caps blow off) and sunglasses
- Water-resistant sunscreen, reapplied, since there's no shade on the river
- Footwear that can get wet, tie-up sandals or neoprene shoes
- A dry change of clothes waiting in the car
- A water bottle, especially on the longer tours
Leave your phone in the car or bring it in a dry bag if you want photos, since Areias do Mar doesn't supply electronics protection.
Getting there and when to book
Praia da Franquia is a short walk from the center of Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the left bank of the river, with free parking nearby. You don't need a car to get there if you're staying in the village.
Book ahead, especially in high season. Since schedules depend on the tide, the team needs time to confirm the right slot, and in July and August tours fill up fast. If you're planning your trip for that period, it's worth reading our guide on beating the crowds in Milfontes in July first, because the same early-is-better logic applies to the river.

Is it worth it?
Yes, without hesitation, but pick the right tour. The 2.5-hour option is enough to grasp the estuary's quiet beauty without wearing you out. The 4-hour option is for anyone who wants to actually feel the river change character as it moves away from the sea. This isn't an adrenaline activity, it's an observation one, and that's exactly why it works so well here.
