Paragliding in Linhares da Beira Over the Serra

Linhares da Beira · 2h · easy

A tandem paragliding flight in Linhares da Beira lasts about 20 minutes and launches from 1,152 metres, with the Serra da Estrela as backdrop. Adventure Sports operates two-seat flights with a certified pilot, starting at €69.99 with photos included.

Linhares da Beira is not just a historic village with a castle and stone-lined streets. It is, first and foremost, a place where people fly. Since 1992, when the Clube de Voo Livre Vertical organised the first paragliding competition ever held in Portugal right here, this slope facing the Serra da Estrela has been the country's reference point for free flight. Pilots call it "The Cathedral", and once you stand at the 1,152-metre launch point looking out over the valley, you understand why.

What a Tandem Flight in Linhares Looks Like

You don't need experience. Or a course. Or even exceptional courage. A tandem paragliding flight uses a two-seat glider where you sit in front of a pilot certified by the Portuguese Free Flight Federation. The pilot handles everything: takeoff, navigation, landing. Your job is to run a few steps down the ramp and then, after that, simply be there. It is easier than it sounds and far more intense than you would expect.

The flight lasts roughly 20 minutes, depending on wind conditions and the thermals of the day. During that time, you soar about 450 metres above the valley floor. The serra fills the horizon, the village shrinks below, and the quiet is the part nobody warns you about. No engine, no noise. Just wind and a view that resists description without sounding like exaggeration.

Who Operates the Flights

What to Expect, Step by Step

You arrive at the village and meet your operator at a pre-arranged point. With Adventure Sports, you need to book at least 8 days in advance. Flights are always weather-dependent, meaning your slot may be rescheduled if the wind does not cooperate. Do not take this personally: it is a sign of professionalism, not disorganisation.

On the day, you receive a short briefing: how to position yourself for takeoff, what to do with your hands, what to expect in the air. Then you drive up to the launch point, about 6.5 km from the landing field. The last 1.5 km is unpaved road. At the top, the pilot prepares the equipment, clips you into the harness, and asks you to run downhill. Three or four steps, and you are airborne.

The first few seconds are the strangest. The ground vanishes, but there is no falling. There is lift. The paraglider catches the ridge's ascending current and begins gaining altitude. From there, it is pure observation. If you want dynamic manoeuvres, tell the pilot. If you prefer calm, say so.

Landing takes place on a flat field in the valley, near a road junction by the village. It is gentle, on your feet, and usually accompanied by an involuntary grin.

Practical Tips

  • What to wear: Comfortable clothing in layers. At 1,152 metres, temperatures drop even in summer. Closed, sturdy shoes. No sandals or flip-flops.
  • Weight limit: 90 kg for Linhares da Beira.
  • Best time: May to September offers the most stable conditions. Mornings tend to be better: calmer air, less turbulence, and the light across the valley is something else entirely.
  • Photos: Adventure Sports includes 10 photos. If you want to bring a GoPro, ask the pilot beforehand.
  • Cancellation: Free up to 48 hours before, which gives flexibility if you are at the mercy of the weather.

Why Linhares and Not Somewhere Else

Portugal has several paragliding spots. Mondim de Basto, São Miguel de Poiares, Arrábida. But Linhares has something the others lack: the combination of flight and village. Before or after you fly, walk through Linhares like you are visiting a museum with no walls. The castle, the Roman forum, stone houses with Manueline details. And if you stay for the hiking trails around the village, you will look up at the launch point and think: "I was up there."

Another advantage: Linhares is not overrun with crowds. If you want an experience without the hassle or the expense, this is it. Fly, land, eat something in the village, maybe pick up a proper souvenir. A full day well spent.

If you need somewhere to stay in the village, there are options for every budget. It is worth sleeping there: waking up in Linhares, with the quiet of the serra and the prospect of flying, is a combination that is hard to beat.

The Best Moment

It is not the takeoff, though that stays with you too. The best moment comes when you are gliding, engineless, noiseless, and you notice the shadow of the paraglider moving across the fields below. It is real, it is simple, and it is probably the closest thing to flying like a bird you will ever experience.
