What to Expect, Step by Step

You arrive at the village and meet your operator at a pre-arranged point. With Adventure Sports, you need to book at least 8 days in advance. Flights are always weather-dependent, meaning your slot may be rescheduled if the wind does not cooperate. Do not take this personally: it is a sign of professionalism, not disorganisation.

On the day, you receive a short briefing: how to position yourself for takeoff, what to do with your hands, what to expect in the air. Then you drive up to the launch point, about 6.5 km from the landing field. The last 1.5 km is unpaved road. At the top, the pilot prepares the equipment, clips you into the harness, and asks you to run downhill. Three or four steps, and you are airborne.

The first few seconds are the strangest. The ground vanishes, but there is no falling. There is lift. The paraglider catches the ridge's ascending current and begins gaining altitude. From there, it is pure observation. If you want dynamic manoeuvres, tell the pilot. If you prefer calm, say so.

Landing takes place on a flat field in the valley, near a road junction by the village. It is gentle, on your feet, and usually accompanied by an involuntary grin.

Portugal has several paragliding spots. Mondim de Basto, São Miguel de Poiares, Arrábida. But Linhares has something the others lack: the combination of flight and village. Before or after you fly, walk through Linhares like you are visiting a museum with no walls. The castle, the Roman forum, stone houses with Manueline details. And if you stay for the hiking trails around the village, you will look up at the launch point and think: "I was up there."
