Horseback Riding Along the River in Ponte de Lima

Arcos de Valdevez · 2h · easy

Centro Equestre Vale do Lima offers 1 to 3-hour horseback rides along the Lima River on Lusitano Purebreds or native Garrano horses. Routes pass the medieval bridge, sections of the Portuguese Way of Santiago, and old trails between vineyards and farmland.

Most visitors to Ponte de Lima cross the medieval bridge, walk along the river, maybe stop for a coffee. That's fine. But there's a better way to see this town and its valley, from the back of a horse, moving at the pace the landscape was designed for, with the Lima River catching light beside you and the only sound being hooves on packed earth.

Centro Equestre Vale do Lima has been running horseback rides through the oldest village in Portugal since 2001. Founded by Filipe Pimenta, the equestrian centre sits on a 10-hectare property at Quinta da Sobreira in Feitosa, a few minutes from the town centre. This isn't a tourist pony ride, it's a proper equestrian facility with 45 stables, covered and open arenas, and a stable of Lusitano Purebreds and Garrano horses.

What the ride looks like

Rides range from 1 to 3 hours, priced between €25 and €150 depending on duration and route. Complete beginners get paired with Garrano horses, a small, sturdy breed native to the mountains of northern Portugal, one of the last semi-wild horse breeds in Europe. They're calm, sure-footed, and forgiving. More experienced riders can take out a Lusitano Purebred, the oldest saddle horse breed in the world, and feel the difference immediately in responsiveness and carriage.

The main trail starts at the Arnado Theme Park on the banks of the Lima and follows the river for over five kilometres. You'll pass the Thematic Garden, the Portuguese Toy Museum, the river beach, a metal bridge over the Labruja River, and finish at Garrida Wharf in Refóios do Lima. There's a Lima River observation post along the way where you can stop and take in the view, the kind of pause that feels earned when you're on horseback.

When to go

Book the morning session. Fewer people on the trails, softer light on the water, and the horses are fresher and more willing. Late afternoon works in summer when the heat drops, but mornings are consistently better. Weekdays are quieter than Saturdays, and since the centre is closed on Sundays, Saturday can feel busier than usual.

Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm.

Multi-day riding adventures

If a few hours isn't enough, the centre runs two extended horseback tours that are genuinely special. The "Ecovia pelo Rio Lima" follows the river for 5 days and 4 nights, arguably the most beautiful way to travel through this valley. The "Serra d'Arga" route covers 8 days and 7 nights, climbing into the mountains through landscapes most tourists never see. Both require advance booking and some riding experience.

Parts of the route overlap with the Portuguese Way of Santiago, which adds a layer of historical weight. Crossing the Roman and medieval bridge of Ponte de Lima on horseback, the way pilgrims did for centuries, is one of those moments that sticks with you.

What to wear and bring

  • Long trousers are essential, jeans work, but riding trousers are more comfortable for anything over an hour
  • Closed-toe shoes with a small heel (hiking boots work well; flat-soled trainers don't)
  • Sunscreen and a hat in summer, there's limited shade along the river sections
  • Water, the centre provides a safety helmet, but bring your own water
  • A camera, the views along the Lima deserve it

Why this one is worth it

Ponte de Lima has deep equestrian roots. The town hosts an annual Horse Fair that draws national and international attention. Centro Equestre Vale do Lima isn't a seasonal side business, it's a year-round training and competition centre where horses are well cared for and guides know what they're doing. You can tell within five minutes of arriving.

The best moment of the ride comes when you leave the main path and turn onto an old trail between farmland, vineyards on one side, the river on the other. It's quiet, green, and the horse seems to know exactly where it's going. Nothing dramatic happens. It's simply, honestly beautiful.

If you're spending time in the region, consider pairing this with a hike, the Sistelo terraces are under an hour away and make a perfect complement. Horses in the morning, hiking in the afternoon.
