Lameiro: the countryside fifteen minutes from the sand

There is a stretch of Leiria that most guides can't be bothered to explain properly: the band between the pine forest and the Atlantic, where villages have names that sound invented and the back roads are friendlier than the motorway. This is where you find Locoinlameiro, a rural tourism property in the village of Lameiro, parish of Carvide, at Rua Principal 440 (postcode 2425-362). It is not a hotel with a lobby and piped-in music. It is something else, and the difference is the whole point.

The address says it all: Rua Principal, the "main street". You are in a village where the main street is, quite literally, the street, and that's an advantage. Carvide sits west of Leiria, on the road to the coast. A few minutes by car gets you to Praia da Vieira and Pedrógão beaches, and the city of Leiria is about a quarter of an hour away. That classic "best of both worlds" pitch is usually brochure nonsense, but here it holds up because the distances are honest.

Who it's for, and who it isn't

Let's be direct. Locoinlameiro is built for families and groups, not for a couple chasing a spa and breakfast champagne. The concept rests on fully-equipped independent kitchens, shared leisure spaces and a private pool. Translation: you come to cook your own meals, let the kids run loose and use the pool without a closing time dictated by a receptionist in a suit.

That changes how you plan the trip. With a proper kitchen, your first stop isn't a restaurant, it's the supermarket, and if you're smart, the Leiria market for fresh fish and vegetables. The price band is €€, which is mid-range. It isn't the cheapest option around and doesn't pretend to be, but for a group splitting the cost and cooking at home, the final bill usually beats a hotel where every meal bleeds your wallet.

Getting there (and why not to trust the GPS blindly)

From Leiria, head toward the coast via Carvide. The village of Lameiro is small and the GPS will get you there, but the last few hundred metres in villages like this are narrow lanes where two cars pass each other patiently. Drive slowly for those final minutes. Coming from north or south on the A17, exit for Marinha Grande or Monte Real and head inland; off the IC1, turn toward Carvide. Either way, a car is essentially mandatory here: public transport in this rural band is thin and was never designed for tourists hauling surfboards and beach chairs.

What to do nearby

The big temptation is to never leave the pool, and in July nobody would blame you. But that wastes the location. The Vieira and Pedrógão beaches are wide and sandy, with no-frills grilled fish places and the kind of tavern where you eat well without ceremony. The appeal isn't some expensive design detail: it's the freedom of no fixed schedule, cooking fresh fish and not having to bundle the whole tribe into the car just to swim. For that kind of traveller, it's a solid choice in western Leiria.
