Bon Vivant

A five-level cocktail bar in Lagos old town with resident DJs and a rooftop terrace overlooking the city. Lonely Planet took notice. Maybe it's time you did too.

Five floors of cocktails in Lagos old town

Rua 25 de Abril is one of those streets in Lagos that gets everything thrown at it: souvenir shops, tourist menus in six languages, sunburned crowds shuffling back from the beach. Number 105 doesn't exactly scream "stop here." But look up. The building keeps going. Bon Vivant occupies five levels, each with its own character, and tops out with an open-air rooftop terrace looking out over the rooftops of the old town. Lonely Planet flagged it, and when an international guide singles out a cocktail bar in a town of 30,000 people, that's worth your attention.

What to drink (and eat)

This is a cocktail bar first. The drinks menu goes well beyond the default gin and tonic that saturates every other bar terrace in the Algarve. Prices sit in the moderate range (€€), which in Lagos means you won't wince at the bill but you're not drinking at backpacker prices either. Tapas are available too, designed to keep you going between rounds rather than replace a proper dinner.

If you want a full meal with a view, Luca's Rooftop Restaurant is another option worth considering. But for a night that's built around drinks and music from resident DJs, Bon Vivant operates in a different lane.

The rooftop question

Let's be direct: the rooftop is the main draw. Late afternoon light over Lagos from up there is genuinely good. But in peak summer, everyone knows this, so it fills up fast. My advice: arrive around 18:30 or 19:00 if you want a spot without elbowing strangers. Later in the evening, the lower floors have their own appeal, particularly when the DJs are playing and the energy shifts.

Off-season is a different story. Quieter, more conversational, and you might actually get to sit on the terrace without a strategy.

Getting there

The address is Rua 25 de Abril 105, 8600-763 Lagos, right in the historic centre. If you're working through our Lagos neighborhood guide, you'll cross this street sooner or later. It's about a 10-minute walk from the train station. If you're driving, park near the old walls and walk in. Do not attempt to drive into the old town in August.

Practical details

  • Hours: not publicly listed. Call ahead at +351 935 718 305 or check bonvivantbarinlagos.com.
  • Reservations: unconfirmed. Arrive early for the rooftop, especially on weekends.
  • Five floors means stairs. If you have mobility concerns, check directly with the bar about accessibility.
  • Dress code: casual but put-together. Leave the wet swimsuit at the beach.
  • Combine it with a late afternoon stroll past some of the traditional shops of Lagos before heading up for sunset drinks.

Who it's for

Bon Vivant works for couples, small groups, or solo travellers who'd rather sit at a bar with a well-made drink than hunt for the cheapest pint. If you want sports on TV and peanuts on the counter, keep walking. If you want a place where someone actually thought about the cocktail list and the space has five distinct floors to explore, this is your stop.

For a broader picture of Lagos after dark and beyond the usual tourist circuit, our wine and petiscos itinerary pairs well with an evening here, giving you a full route through the town's better food and drink spots.

Lagos has been evolving. There's more quality, more ambition, and more reasons to stay out past sunset. Bon Vivant is part of that shift: a cocktail bar that takes itself seriously enough to fill five floors of an old town building, right up to the sky.
