The ground floor is a curated Portuguese products shop. The first floor is an art gallery. The top floor is a rooftop terrace with panoramic views over Lagos' historic centre and the Santo António Church. It sounds like a concept dreamed up by a branding agency, but it works, and it works well.

The shop: actual quality, not tourist tat

Walk in at street level and you'll find a tight edit of Portuguese goods. Olive oils from the Alentejo, tinned fish from proper conserveiras, Algarve wines, contemporary ceramics. The selection is specific enough that a Portuguese person would find something they haven't tried. That's the test, and it passes. If you want more of this kind of thing, Lagos has a handful of traditional shops worth your time, but Mar d'Estórias has the best curation of the lot.

The gallery: worth the five minutes

One floor up, a compact art gallery hosts rotating exhibitions. Local and national artists, with work that engages with the region without resorting to watercolour seascapes. It's not MoMA, but it's free, it's well-lit, and it adds something genuine to the visit. Don't skip it on the way to the roof.

The rooftop: this is why you're here

Let's be honest. The terrace is the main draw. The view across Lagos' rooftops is one of the best in town. The Santo António Church tower sits right in front of you, and on clear days you can see the ocean beyond. Late afternoon, when the light turns the terracotta tiles gold, this is one of the finest spots for a drink anywhere on the Algarve coast.

When to go

Mar d'Estórias stays open year-round, which in Lagos is not a given. Off-season is arguably the better time to visit: fewer people, same view, calmer bartenders. If you're in Lagos between October and April, when half the restaurants shut down, this is one of the reliable constants. Pair it with a wine and petiscos itinerary and you've got a proper afternoon.

In summer, use it as the starting point for a longer evening. Sunset drinks here, then walk over to Bon Vivant to keep things going.

Mar d'Estórias pulls off the rare trick of being three things at once without doing any of them badly. The shop stocks products worth buying. The gallery shows work worth seeing. The rooftop serves drinks worth ordering, with a view that justifies the walk up. In a town full of places trying too hard or not trying at all, this one gets the balance right.
