Vila Real: Wine Tasting at the Mateus Palace
The Wine & Vine visit at Casa de Mateus pairs the 18th-century Baroque palace with a tasting of three DOP Douro wines for €33. It includes access to the 16th-century winery, formal gardens, and a guided tasting of Lavradores de Feitoria, Clube NOSSO, and Quinta da Costa das Aguaneiras wines.
Casa de Mateus doesn't need a long introduction. The 18th-century Baroque facade has appeared on millions of Mateus Rosé bottles, and most people recognise the silhouette. But what many visitors don't realise is that behind the label, there's a serious wine experience that's worth every euro and every minute of your time in Vila Real.
What the Wine & Vine Visit Actually Is
The Fundação Casa de Mateus offers several visit types, but the one that really matters for wine lovers is the "Wine & Vine" experience. For 33 euros, it starts with an audio-guided tour of the House Museum (about 25 minutes), moves through the 16th-century winery, and finishes with a tasting of three DOP Douro wines in the dedicated tasting room. This isn't a generic tasting: the three wines represent three distinct projects born on this estate, Lavradores de Feitoria, Clube NOSSO, and Quinta da Costa das Aguaneiras. Each tells a different part of the Douro's winemaking story.
Your ticket also includes free access to the park, chapel (open April to October), gardens, vegetable garden, vineyards, and forest. Plan at least two hours to do everything without rushing, three if you want to properly explore the grounds.
For Serious Wine Enthusiasts: The Wine Maker Visit
If wine is your real priority, the Wine Maker Special Visit (150 euros) is a different experience entirely. It's led personally by winemaker José Carlos Fernandes, who walks visitors through the vineyards, the open-air Vineyard Museum, and the 16th-century winery while explaining the Douro's terroirs and the philosophy behind each wine. The tasting is more extensive and personalised. It also includes access to the House Museum and spaces not normally open to the public, like the old Frasqueira and the Casa das Batatas. Students up to 25 pay 105 euros.
Is it worth it? If you have genuine interest in winemaking and want to understand what sets Douro wines apart from other regions, absolutely. José Carlos Fernandes is generous with his knowledge and patient with questions. But if you're after a casual tasting with a beautiful setting, the 33-euro Wine & Vine is more than enough.

Practical Tips
Morning is the best time to visit. Fewer people, softer light on the formal gardens, and you'll still have time for lunch in Vila Real afterwards. In the afternoon, especially on weekends, tour groups increase and the gardens get busier.
Wear comfortable shoes. The park has dirt and gravel paths, and if you do the full vineyard and forest walk, you'll cover a fair distance. In summer, bring a hat and water. The cedar shade in the gardens is pleasant, but the vineyards are fully exposed.
The chapel is only open from April to October. If visiting outside this period, ask about chapel access when purchasing your ticket, but don't count on it being available.
The Best Moment
The highlight of the Wine & Vine visit is the tasting in the tasting room, particularly when you try the Lavradores de Feitoria red alongside the Quinta da Costa das Aguaneiras. They're two wines from the same territory but with completely different personalities, and understanding why while looking out at the vineyards through the window is one of those experiences that justifies the trip.
But don't underestimate the gardens. The sculpted boxwood hedges and the reflecting pool mirroring the facade are probably the most photographed image in Vila Real, a city with much more to offer beyond Mateus. Set aside at least 30 minutes just for the grounds.
Before or After Your Visit
If the visit works up an appetite, Vila Real has solid dining options. For coffee and pastries, stop by Pastelaria Gomes, a local institution. And if you're planning a longer trip through northern Portugal, Casa de Mateus works perfectly as a stop on the way to the Douro wine country.
The Wine & Vine experience at Casa de Mateus isn't about the Mateus Rosé you find in supermarkets. It's about understanding the context, the territory, and the DOP Douro wines this estate has been producing seriously for decades. If you care about wine and history, it's one of the best two hours you can spend in Vila Real.
