Trilho dos Currais on Foot in Gerês: The Guide

Gerês · 5h · moderate

The PR3, Trilho dos Currais, is a 10 km loop past three mountain corrals tied to the vezeira tradition. Geresmont, in Vilar da Veiga, guides it and runs river-pool water walks from around 20 € per person.

Why Trilho dos Currais is different from the rest of Gerês

Trilho dos Currais (the PR3, officially PR3 TBR) is one of those routes everyone recommends and almost nobody does at a proper pace. It is a roughly 10 km loop, starting and finishing near Vidoeiro, just outside the village of Gerês. The appeal is not only the scenery: it is the story the trail tells. It threads through three mountain corrals, Espinheira, Carvalha das Éguas and Lomba do Vidoeiro, which are still part of the living tradition of the vezeira, when shepherds drive their cattle up to the high pastures between May and September. Walking here means following paths that have existed for centuries, and you feel it in the stone walls and shelters along the way.

On difficulty, do not be fooled by the gentle "community traditions" theme. The trail has firm climbs and a few technical stretches, and most people take 4 to 5 hours to close the loop. It is moderate to demanding, not a flip-flops Sunday stroll.

Who guides it: the real operator

If you want to do the Currais with a guide, and with a chance to swim in a river pool or under a small fall at the end, the operator I know that actually works inside the park is Geresmont - Desporto Aventura, based in Vilar da Veiga, in the heart of Gerês. It is an established adventure sports company that runs canyoning, jeep tours, hikes and what they call "caminhadas aquáticas", a walk along the riverbed.

  • Operator: Geresmont - Desporto Aventura
  • Website: https://geresmont.com
  • Phone: (+351) 966 793 234 / (+351) 919 617 773
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Base: Vilar da Veiga, Gerês

One honest caveat: Geresmont guides Trilho dos Currais and, separately, runs the water-walking activity with pool swims. The exact combination of "Currais on foot plus a waterfall dip" in the same outing is worth confirming directly with the operator, because it depends on the season and the river flow. Do not build expectations on guesswork: call or email before you book and say clearly that you want the trail with a swim stop.

Prices I could confirm

For the water-walking component (the riverbed route with pools and small jumps), Geresmont charges by group size: around 35 € per person for groups of 1 to 4, 25 € for groups of 5 to 10 and 20 € for 11 or more. A wetsuit rents for about 10 € and boots for 5 €. The price of the standalone guided Currais hike is not published online, so confirm it directly with the operator. It includes guiding, personal protective equipment and the legally required insurance.

How the day goes, step by step

Morning is, without question, the best time for this trail. There are fewer people, the light hits the stone walls sideways, and in summer you catch the mountain before the real heat arrives. The usual meeting point is the Geresmont base in Vilar da Veiga, where you get the briefing, a footwear check and any gear you need.

The loop starts near Vidoeiro. The first section climbs steadily and is where you feel your legs. Then the trail opens into high pasture, with the corrals appearing one by one. The middle one, Carvalha das Éguas, is my favourite for a pause: you get a real sense of the scale of the range and can take photos without rushing. A good Geresmont guide uses these stops to tell the story of the vezeira, and that is exactly what separates doing the trail alone from doing it with someone who knows it.

The moment everyone waits for is the swim. When the flow allows it, stopping at a mountain pool is the high point of the day. Gerês water in June still snatches your breath away, and that is precisely what makes it unforgettable after hours of climbing. Do not expect a postcard-sized giant waterfall: expect clear pools and small drops, which is what this part of the range genuinely offers. Confirm with the operator which swim spot is planned for your date, because it varies.

What to wear and bring

  • Trail shoes with proper grip. No flat trainers: there is loose rock and damp sections.
  • Swimwear under your clothes and a microfibre towel.
  • At least 1.5 litres of water and some nuts or fruit. It is a long walk.
  • Hat and sunscreen in summer. There are long stretches with no shade.
  • A light windbreaker even on sunny days. The mountain changes mood fast.
  • Bags for your rubbish. Carry out everything you carry in; the park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

When to book and how to get there

Summer is the only time it makes sense to count on a swim, but it is also when the trail fills up. Book a few days ahead, especially in July and August and at weekends. May, June and September give you the best of both: still-decent flow and fewer people.

By car, Gerês is about an hour and a half from Porto and around 50 minutes from Braga. Vilar da Veiga has parking, but at peak summer you either arrive early or circle for a spot. If you want to take the car out of the equation and plan your stay at the right pace, look at our 24 hours in Gerês itinerary and the guide to doing a weekend without the crowds.

Where to eat and drink afterwards

Once you close the loop, the real hunger hits. For a no-nonsense mountain lunch, Restaurante Lurdes Capela is one of the most reliable stops in the village. And if you still have energy for an evening drink, Chamadouro Bar is the place to refill on sugar and retell the day. If you would rather stretch the trip across more spots nearby, our guide to five day trips that deserve your detour has ideas for the rest of the weekend.

In the end, what makes this trail worth it is not the pool photo or the 10 km on your watch. It is realising you are walking paths shepherds have used for generations, with someone beside you who can explain why. Do it in the morning, bring your swimwear, and confirm the swim with Geresmont before you go. It earns the effort.
