Ponte de Lima: Spring Wine Tasting at Quinta do Ameal

Ponte de Lima · 1h30 · easy

Quinta do Ameal in Refóios do Lima offers guided visits through its organic Loureiro vineyards, winery, and a three-wine tasting for €26. In spring, the view over the Lima Valley from the upper vineyard, with morning mist lifting off the river, is reason enough to book.

About eight minutes east of Ponte de Lima's medieval bridge, past the roundabout and up a narrow road lined with stone walls, you reach Quinta do Ameal. The estate has been making wine since 1710, long before anyone called it "wine tourism." Now part of the Esporão group, it won Best Regional Accommodation at the Best of Wine Tourism 2026 awards. But it's the wine, not the accolades, that makes this worth your morning.

What the visit includes

The experience is called Visita Ameal. It lasts about 90 minutes, costs €26 per person, and covers three things: a walk through the vineyards, a tour of the winery, and a guided tasting of three wines. Those three wines are the Ameal Loureiro (the house classic), the Ameal Solo Único (aged, more layered), and the Ameal Reserva. All made exclusively from Loureiro grapes grown organically on the estate's 14 hectares of vineyard.

You must book in advance by emailing [email protected] or calling (+351) 933 560 013. There are no fixed public tour times. The estate schedules visits based on mutual availability, which means smaller groups and a more personal experience.

Walking the vineyards

The visit starts outdoors, in the vines. In April and May, the Loureiro vines are in full bud break, tiny green clusters appearing between new leaves. Your guide will explain the traditional pergola training system used throughout Minho and why Quinta do Ameal chose to go fully organic. Of the estate's 30 hectares, 14 are planted with vines and eight are forest, creating a specific microclimate in the Lima Valley.

The highlight is reaching the upper vineyard, where you can see the Lima River below. In spring, with morning mist still lifting off the water, this view alone is worth the visit. Book the morning slot if you can.

The winery

From the vineyards, you descend to the cellar. Here, the guide walks you through vinification, bottling, and labelling. What makes this winery different from most Vinho Verde producers is its single-minded focus on one grape variety. While the majority of Minho's winemakers blend several native varieties, Quinta do Ameal has bet everything on Loureiro. That dedication shows in the glass.

The wine tasting

Tasting takes place in a room overlooking either the vineyard or the garden, depending on the weather. Three wines, three different expressions of the same grape. The base Loureiro is the easiest to drink: floral, citrus, with the crisp acidity that pairs perfectly with grilled fish. The Solo Único has more complexity. And the Reserva will change your mind if you think Vinho Verde is only a summer sipper.

You can buy bottles directly at the estate. Prices tend to be better than in shops.

Before or after: the Vinho Verde Interpretation Centre

To round out your day, stop by the Centro de Interpretação e Promoção do Vinho Verde in Ponte de Lima's town centre. It's housed in the Casa Torreada dos Barbosa Aranha, a 17th-century tower house at Rua Fonte da Vila, 28. Entry is just €3 (€1.50 for students and seniors, free for under 12s) and includes the permanent exhibition about the wine region plus a tasting in their dedicated room.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00. Last entry at 12:00 in the morning and 17:00 in the afternoon. It's a good place to understand the broader context of Vinho Verde before heading to a working estate.

Practical tips

  • What to wear: Closed, comfortable shoes for walking through the vineyards. In April, bring a light jacket. The Lima Valley cools down quickly when the sun disappears behind clouds.
  • When to go: April and May are ideal. Vines are budding, temperatures hover between 15-22°C, and summer crowds haven't arrived. Avoid August.
  • Getting there: Quinta do Ameal is in Refóios do Lima, about 8 km from central Ponte de Lima. You'll need a car. GPS: 41.787290° N, -8.520741° W.
  • How long to allow: The visit takes 90 minutes, but allow two hours so you're not rushing. If you combine it with the Interpretation Centre in town, set aside a full morning.
  • After the visit: Have lunch in Ponte de Lima. Restaurante O Lagar serves reliable Minhota cooking, or try Restaurante Beco das Selas for something more contemporary.

Why this particular experience

There's no shortage of quintas in Minho that welcome visitors. What sets Quinta do Ameal apart is the combination of three things: a 300-year-old property, a radical commitment to a single grape variety, and the backing of the Esporão group, which brought investment and rigour without stripping away the artisanal character.
