Paragliding in Linhares da Beira: Fly over Mondego Valley
A tandem paragliding flight in Linhares da Beira gives you 15 to 20 minutes above the Mondego Valley, launching from roughly 1,000 metres on the Serra da Estrela slopes. With pilots certified by the Portuguese Free Flight Federation, it's one of Portugal's most striking free-flight experiences.
There's a reason Linhares da Beira is called Portugal's paragliding capital, and it has nothing to do with marketing. The launch ramp sits at roughly 1,000 metres on the slopes of Serra da Estrela, facing the Mondego Valley. The thermals here are some of the most consistent in southern Europe. The scenery, a medieval castle, a historic village clinging to granite slopes, a glacial valley stretching to the horizon, is the kind of thing that makes you forget you're dangling under a fabric wing at altitude.
The Provider: Adventure Sports
Marcelo runs tandem paragliding flights out of Linhares da Beira and has been doing so for years. He's certified by the Portuguese Free Flight Federation and knows this launch site better than most. Booking is refreshingly low-tech: call 917 386 525 or email [email protected], agree on a date, and show up. Flights are also available through the Odisseias platform, which offers packages that include photos.
Alternatively, Clube de Voo Livre Vertical (clubevertical.org) is the club behind the annual International Paragliding Festival in Linhares and also arranges tandem baptism flights. Contact them at [email protected] or 275 982 532. Escola Aventura Linhares da Beira ([email protected]) is another local outfit offering daily tandem flights.
What the Flight Involves
No experience needed. None. The pilot handles everything, you're along for the ride. Here's the sequence:
- Ground briefing (10-15 minutes): The pilot walks you through takeoff procedure, what to expect in the air, and your one job: run when told to run, then sit back.
- Takeoff: A few steps downhill on the launch ramp and you're airborne. The ground drops away fast and the valley opens up below you. This is the adrenaline peak.
- The flight (15-20 minutes): The pilot catches thermals to gain altitude and extend your airtime. On good days, you'll climb well above the launch point. The views of Linhares castle, the historic village, and the Mondego Valley are worth every second.
- Landing: Gentle touchdown in a designated field in the valley below. You land on your feet, it's easier than stepping off a kerb.

Pricing and Booking
During the International Paragliding Festival (usually August), tandem baptism flights cost €80, a special festival rate. For flights outside the festival period, confirm directly with the provider as prices may vary by season and conditions. The Odisseias platform also offers flight-and-photo packages for under €65, though availability varies.
Photos and video of your flight are typically available for an additional fee paid directly to the pilot, unless you book a package that includes them.
What to Wear and Bring
- Footwear: Hiking boots or sturdy trainers. No flip-flops, you'll be running down a dirt ramp.
- Clothing: It's noticeably colder at 1,000 metres, even in summer. Bring a windbreaker at minimum. In spring or autumn, layer up.
- Sun protection: You're at altitude and closer to the sun than you think. Sunscreen and sunglasses are non-negotiable.
- Water and snacks: The launch site is on the mountain, far from any café. Bring water.
- Phone: Fully charged. You'll want to film, and the pilot can use your phone for in-flight photos if you don't have the photo package.
Best Time to Fly
The flying season in Linhares runs from March to October, but the sweet spot is May, June, and September. Thermals are strong enough for longer flights without the excessive summer heat that can make July and August conditions more turbulent.
Morning sessions, between 10am and noon, tend to offer smoother conditions and beautiful light across the valley. After 2pm, thermals intensify, great for experienced pilots looking to gain altitude, but potentially bumpier for a first flight. If you're nervous about turbulence, ask for the morning slot.
Getting There
Linhares da Beira is in the municipality of Celorico da Beira, Guarda district. By car, it's about 2.5 hours from Porto via the A25, or 3.5 hours from Lisbon via the A1 and A25. The village is small and well signposted from Celorico.
The launch ramp is above the village, the operator will arrange a meeting point, usually by the castle or in the village square, and you'll drive up together. There's parking in the village but not at the ramp itself.
What Makes This Flight Different
You can paraglide in plenty of places in Portugal, Arrábida, the Algarve, Madeira. But Linhares has something none of them can match: the combination of altitude, glacial valley, and a 12th-century castle directly below your feet. When you're in the air, there's no concrete, no highways, just ancient stone walls, granite terraces, and a valley carved by glaciers. It looks like it belongs in another century, but you feel it with a very present intensity.
The best moment? When the pilot goes quiet and you're both just listening to the wind in the canopy. Two minutes of that, looking down at the valley, and you understand why people keep coming back to Linhares year after year.
