AP Sines - Costa Alentejana

A four-star hotel in central Sines with sea views, spa, and pools that serves as the best base for exploring the wild beaches of the Alentejo and Vicentine coasts. Book ahead in summer.

A Proper Hotel in a Town That Needed One

Sines has always punched above its weight. Birthplace of Vasco da Gama, home to one of Portugal's best music festivals, surrounded by wild Atlantic beaches, and sitting on a stretch of coastline that the Algarve crowds haven't fully discovered yet. What it lacked, for a long time, was a decent place to sleep. The AP Sines, a four-star hotel right in the town centre, fixed that.

Located at Rua Marquês de Pombal 110, the hotel sits within walking distance of Sines' compact historic centre, its castle, its fish restaurants, and the urban beach. It's part of the AP Hotels & Resorts chain, and while that might not sound particularly exciting, what matters here is execution: sea views that actually deliver, an indoor and outdoor pool, a spa, a restaurant, and a bar. For a small Alentejo coast town, this is serious infrastructure.

Location and getting there

Sines is roughly 90 minutes south of Lisbon by car, via the A2 motorway and then the IC33. If you're coming from the Algarve, it's about two hours north. Public buses connect Lisbon to Sines via Rede Expressos, but a car is strongly recommended. The coastline around here rewards exploration, and the best beaches require wheels.

The hotel's central position means Sines Castle, with its deep connections to Vasco da Gama, is a short walk away. So are the narrow streets of the old town, where you'll find grilled fish spots and cafés that haven't changed their furniture in decades. That proximity to real town life, rather than resort isolation, is what makes staying here worthwhile.

What you get

The rooms are comfortable and well-maintained, as you'd expect from a four-star property. Ask for a sea-view room. The premium is worth it, especially at sunset when the Atlantic puts on a show that no hotel interior designer could compete with.

The outdoor pool is the kind of place where afternoons disappear. On windy days, and Sines gets its share of Atlantic gusts even in summer, the indoor pool and spa become the better option. The hotel restaurant serves reliable meals. The Alentejo coast is rich territory for seafood, black pork, and bread-based dishes like açorda. You won't have the best meal of your trip here, but you won't be disappointed either. For something more characterful, walk into town. Sines has excellent petisco houses within minutes of the hotel door.

Pricing falls in the €€€ bracket. It's not cheap, but it reflects the fact that quality accommodation in Sines is still relatively scarce. During peak season, especially around the Festival Músicas do Mundo in July, rates climb and availability shrinks. Book early.

Your base for the coast

Think of the AP Sines as a base camp. To the north, São Torpes beach offers warm waters (thanks to a nearby power plant's thermal discharge) and decent surf. To the south, the road winds through the Costa Vicentina towards Porto Covo, the Ilha do Pessegueiro beaches, and eventually the Rota Vicentina walking trails that trace the coast all the way to the Algarve.

Sines itself has more to offer than most visitors expect. Beyond the obvious castle and beaches, the town's industrial and brutalist architecture tells a different story about Portugal's 20th century. And if you're planning a longer stay, our guide to Sines beyond the festival covers the town's less obvious attractions, from its industrial port heritage to its connection to Portuguese poetry.

Practical tips

  • Book directly through the hotel website (ap-hotelsresorts.com) or call +351 269 000 100. Direct bookings sometimes offer better cancellation terms.
  • If you're visiting during Festival Músicas do Mundo (usually July), book months ahead. The whole town fills up.
  • Request a sea-view room at booking. The difference in experience is significant.
  • The spa is a smart backup plan for windy days. Sines sits on an exposed headland, and Atlantic winds can be persistent.
  • No particular dress code for the restaurant, though the atmosphere is more polished than flip-flops-and-boardshorts casual.
  • Cards accepted throughout. No need for cash.
  • Check directly with the hotel for current seasonal hours and any special packages for longer stays.
