Spa Retreat at Hotel Villa Batalha
Hotel Villa Batalha offers a 120-minute spa circuit with a heated pool facing the Batalha Monastery, jacuzzi, sauna, and Turkish bath. With couple packages from €66 and simultaneous massages at €110.99, it's the ideal retreat in central Portugal.
There's a meaningful difference between going to a spa and doing a proper spa escape. One is a massage before lunch. The other is when you switch off your phone, put on the robe, and decide the world can wait. Hotel Villa Batalha, steps from the Batalha Monastery, offers exactly that second option, and it does it with a view no city spa can match.
The Spa Circuit
The Villa Batalha spa isn't one of those sprawling mega-complexes with fifteen rooms you never figure out. It's compact, well-designed, and, the detail that changes everything, the indoor pool has a glass wall looking directly at the Monastery. You're literally gazing at a UNESCO monument while floating in heated water with relaxation jets. It's surreal in the best possible way.
The full 120-minute circuit includes:
- Heated indoor pool with hydrotherapy jets
- Jacuzzi
- Foot bath
- Dry sauna
- Turkish bath (steam room)
- Ice fountain
- Maintenance gym
A tip: start with the Turkish bath, then the sauna, use the ice fountain between them (yes, it's a shock, but your body will thank you), and finish in the pool. Most people do it backwards and miss the thermal contrast effect that actually releases deep muscle tension.
Massages and Treatments
The spa offers massages, facials, body treatments, and signature rituals. All products used are 100% natural, cruelty-free, and sustainably produced, which in a 4-star hotel in central Portugal isn't a given, but they take it seriously here.
For couples, the simultaneous romantic massage (30 minutes each) is the standout. Two massages at the same time, same room. Through the Odisseias platform, this experience is available at €110.99 for two people. The half-board package (starter, main course, and dessert at restaurant Adega dos Frades) starts at €66.
Important: massages and rituals require 48-hour advance booking. Don't show up expecting to walk in.
Adega dos Frades Restaurant
Named after the cloister of D. João I in the Monastery, where friars traded prayers for meals. The restaurant spans about 200 square metres with plenty of natural light and, predictably, views of the Monastery, this hotel clearly knows its greatest asset.
The kitchen is contemporary with a strong regional foundation. Try the chícharo paste (a legume recently revived by the region with a wonderful earthy flavour), the pork belly stuffed with sausage, or the goat and lamb duo with fava bean risotto. The pear tart is the dessert sleeper hit, many guests never see it on the menu because they're already full, but it's worth saving room for.
For more dining options in town, Restaurante Dom Duarte is another solid choice.
The Grounds
The hotel sits on 20,000 square metres of landscaped gardens, giving it a retreat feel that urban properties simply cannot offer. There's a Pitch & Putt golf course for those who want to move without leaving the property, and the gardens are perfect for a morning walk before breakfast.
Rooms are bright, with wooden floors and floor-to-ceiling windows. The best ones face the Monastery, ask specifically when booking, because the difference is real. Waking up to that Gothic silhouette framed in your window while drinking coffee is one of those small luxuries that sticks with you.
