Sunrise Kayak to Benagil Caves in Lagoa: Beat the Crowds

· 2h · easy

Secret Algarve's sunrise kayak tour departs Benagil around 7:30 AM, before the tourist boats launch. At €35 per person for the 2-hour tour, you enter Benagil cave in morning light with almost no one else around, a world apart from the midday chaos.

There's a window, roughly between 7:30 and 9 in the morning, when Benagil cave belongs to the kayakers. No motorboats, no queues, no loudspeakers echoing off the limestone. Just the slap of water on rock and that extraordinary shaft of light pouring through the cave's natural skylight. If you're going to see Benagil, this is when you should see it.

Who Are Secret Algarve

Secret Algarve is one of the most established kayak operators in Benagil, with over 1,400 reviews on TripAdvisor and a 4.7-star rating. Their office is on Estrada de Benagil, about 100 metres down from the car park at the top of the hill, not on the beach, which catches people out. Search "Secret Algarve" on Google Maps and you'll find it easily. It's the first road on the right as you come down from the parking area, across from the O Pescador restaurant.

What sets them apart from other operators in the area: they're the only company in Benagil with private lockers and showers. Seems like a small thing until you've finished two hours of sea kayaking in July and realise you don't have to drive home caked in salt.

Tour Options and Pricing

Secret Algarve runs three main tour lengths:

  • 1-hour tour (€25/person), Direct paddle to Benagil cave and back. Gets the job done but feels rushed.
  • 1.5–2-hour tour (€35/person), The most popular option. Covers the main cave, secret beaches, and several rock formations along the coast. This is the one I'd recommend.
  • 3-hour tour (€45/person), Extended coastal exploration, good if you want to take your time and stop at more spots.

All tours include kayak (double or single), life jacket, helmet, and guide. They accept participants from age 4 upwards.

The Sunrise Tour: Why This One Matters

The sunrise tour departs around 7:30–7:45 AM, depending on the time of year. And this is where the real difference lies. By 10 AM, Benagil cave is a traffic jam of tour boats, SUP boards, kayaks from half a dozen operators, and swimmers. The experience turns into an aquatic roundabout where everyone's trying to get the same photograph.

Early morning is a different world. The water is typically calmer, wind in the Algarve tends to pick up in the afternoon, and the light coming through the cave's eye has that pinkish-gold quality that disappears after 9 AM. You'll share the space with maybe one or two other kayak groups at most. The motorboats haven't launched yet.

Something people don't expect: inside the cave, you're allowed to stay up to 8 minutes on a kayak or other non-motorised vessel. That's not a lot of time, but without crowds, those 8 minutes are enough to take in the space, photograph it properly, and simply look up.

What to Expect, Step by Step

Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure at Secret Algarve's office. You'll get fitted with equipment, stow your belongings in lockers, and receive a quick briefing on paddling technique and safety. If you've never kayaked before, don't worry, the sea here is generally calm in the morning and the guides know how to work with beginners.

From the launch point near Benagil beach, you paddle along the coastline toward the cave. The journey itself is worth the price of admission: golden limestone cliffs, tiny coves you can't reach on foot, natural arches carved through the rock. Your guide will pause to explain the geology and let the group regroup.

Entering Benagil cave, Algar de Benagil, technically, happens through an opening at the base of the cliff. It's wide enough for kayaks, but there's a moment of transition from open sea to cave interior that genuinely impresses. The scale of the interior space surprises every time, even when you've seen hundreds of photos beforehand.

After the main cave, the 2-hour tour continues along the coast, passing smaller caves and stopping at beaches accessible only from the water. These lesser-known spots are where the experience takes on a different character, less iconic, but more intimate.

Practical Tips

  • What to wear: Swimsuit underneath, a top you don't mind getting wet. Early morning can be cool, but you warm up fast once paddling. Water shoes are essential, don't go barefoot or in flip-flops.
  • What to bring: Waterproof sunscreen (apply before you leave), a hat that can get wet, camera or phone in a waterproof pouch. Secret Algarve has lockers for everything else.
  • When to book: In summer (June–September), book at least a week ahead, especially for sunrise slots. In low season, two or three days is usually fine.
  • Sea conditions: Tours are weather-dependent. If the sea is rough, tours get cancelled or rescheduled. This happens more in winter and early spring.
  • Getting there: By car, head to Benagil (GPS: Estrada de Benagil, Lagoa). There's a car park at the top of the hill that fills early in summer. By public transport, the Vamus Algarve bus 40 connects Lagoa to Benagil, but early morning schedules are limited, a car is more practical for sunrise tours.

Who It's For (and Who Should Skip It)

This tour works for most people with a basic level of fitness. You don't need to be an athlete, but you will be paddling for one to two hours, so some arm endurance helps. Children from age 4 can ride in a double kayak with an adult.

If you're claustrophobic, the main cave is huge and open at the top, so it's not an issue. The smaller caves along the coast are tighter, you can choose to skip those.

If you just want to see the cave quickly and snap a photo, honestly, a boat tour is faster and requires zero physical effort. But it's not the same experience. In a kayak, the scale shifts. You're at water level, moving at your own pace, hearing the sounds of the cave without an engine underneath you. It's the difference between seeing a place and being in a place.
