Fundão Cherry Route: A Train Ride to the Orchards
CP's Cherry Route takes you by train from Lisbon to Fundão to pick cherries in Serra da Gardunha, with award-winning cheese tasting and a regional lunch included. The programme runs between May and June, with limited spots that sell out fast.
Some experiences in Portugal run on a clock so tight that if you blink, you miss them. The Rota das Cerejas do Fundão, the Fundão Cherry Route, is one. Between late May and mid-June, CP (Portuguese Railways) runs a handful of day trips from Lisbon to the heart of Serra da Gardunha, where passengers pick cherries straight from the tree. It is not a generic sightseeing tour. It is a full day of train travel, artisan cheese, regional lunch, and orchards heavy with red fruit.
What the Cherry Route Actually Is
The experience is a partnership between CP, the Fundão Municipality, and ground operator Caminhos da História, who handle everything once you step off the train. The concept is straightforward: leave Lisbon early morning in a dedicated first-class Intercidades carriage and return by nightfall carrying a kilogram of cherries and the quiet satisfaction of having done something most Lisbon residents don't even know about.
In recent editions, the price has been around €86 per adult and €55 for children aged 4 to 12, all inclusive: return train journey, coach transfers, welcome breakfast, cheese tasting, full lunch, orchard visit, and insurance. Confirm current pricing directly with the operator, as it may change between editions.
The Itinerary, Step by Step
Morning: Lisbon to Castelo Branco
The day starts early. Departure from Lisboa-Santa Apolónia at 8:15 AM, with boarding also possible at Vila Franca de Xira, Santarém, Entroncamento, and Abrantes. The Intercidades journey takes roughly three hours and follows the Tagus river for a good stretch. If you can get a seat on the left side of the train (facing forward), the river views near Constância are worth the effort of arriving early.
You arrive in Castelo Branco around 11:00 AM, where a coach is waiting. This is where the land-based part begins.
First Stop: Quinta do Pomar Cheese Dairy, Soalheira
The first visit is to the artisan cheese dairy Quinta do Pomar in the village of Soalheira. They produce traditional sheep and goat cheese here, and the tasting is generous. This dairy's cheese was awarded Best Cheese in the World in 2024, which should tell you something. The tip: don't eat too much. Lunch follows and it is substantial.
Lunch at Dom Vicente, Fundão
Lunch is at Dom Vicente restaurant in Fundão, featuring a menu of regional produce. Expect cured meats, roast kid or lamb, local sides, and desserts that will probably involve cherry in some form. It is honest food, no gastronomic pretension, made with ingredients that speak for themselves.
If you are planning to spend more time in Fundão, Dom Vicente is a reference worth bookmarking.
Afternoon: The Cherry Orchard
The orchard visit is, without question, the highlight. The coach takes the group to Aldeia Nova do Cabo, where you walk into a cherry orchard in full harvest season. You can pick directly from the tree and eat on the spot, with the mountains as a backdrop. At the end, each participant takes home one kilogram of cherries.
This is where the programme separates itself from any other food tour. Standing among loaded cherry trees with red-stained hands and the scent of ripe fruit in the air is not something you can replicate in a market or a gourmet shop. If you have read our guide to cherry blossom season in Fundão, know that this is the summer edition: less photogenic, more delicious.
Return
The coach returns to Fundão, where the train departs around 7:25 PM, arriving at Lisboa-Santa Apolónia close to 10:50 PM. It is a long day, but the pace is well managed, no rushing.
Practical Tips
- When to book: Spots sell out fast. As soon as CP announces dates (usually March or April), book immediately. In 2025, there were seven dates between May 31 and June 21.
- What to wear: Comfortable closed-toe shoes, mandatory. The orchard is uneven ground with dirt and grass. A hat and sunscreen are essential in June.
- What to bring: A small backpack, water bottle, and an extra bag in case you want to buy regional products along the way.
- Best day of the week: If you have the option, weekdays are less crowded than Saturdays. The orchard experience is calmer and you get better photos without crowds.
Who This Is For (and Who It Isn't)
This is not for anyone seeking extreme adventure or improvised itineraries. It is a structured programme with set times and included meals. It is perfect for couples, families with children aged 4 and up, or groups of friends who want a different kind of day without having to drive. If you prefer exploring at your own pace, consider going independently and check our complete Fundão guide to build your own route.
If you stay into the late afternoon, Zona L Bar is a solid option to close out the day before catching the return train.
