The Trail of the Discoveries returns to Belmonte on May 24, 2026, for another edition combining sport, nature and historic heritage. Organized by the Municipality of Belmonte, this event has established itself as one of the most captivating trail running races in Portugal's interior, attracting both Portuguese and international runners to the homeland of Pedro Álvares Cabral.

The start of all routes is scheduled for 09:00, in Carvalhal Formoso (Cecurde area), with the finish line in a truly unique setting: the courtyard of Belmonte Castle, a medieval monument linked to the Cabral family and a symbolic stage for the celebrations of the Portuguese Discoveries.

Participants can choose from three options tailored to different fitness levels: Trail Sprint, 26 km with 900 metres of positive elevation, for the more experienced athletes; Trail Mini/Youth, 13.08 km with 512 metres of elevation, ideal for intermediate runners and younger participants; and Walking, an accessible 10 km route with 346 metres of elevation, designed for families and nature lovers.

The course crosses the eastern slope of Serra da Estrela, offering spectacular views over valleys, centuries-old chestnut groves, streams and mountain villages of Beira Interior. It is a unique opportunity to discover the Belmonte municipality through its rural pathways and natural heritage.

Registration and bib collection take place at Belmonte Castle on Saturday May 23 (11:00-13:00 and 15:00-19:00) and on race day, between 07:00 and 08:15. The organization provides a free shuttle service at 08:10 to the starting point, a post-race meal and prizes for the winners. GPX files and aid station details will be released the week before the race.

After the race, Belmonte is worth exploring further: visit the Castle, the Jewish Museum, the Church of Santiago and other treasures of this historic village classified as a Historic Village of Portugal.
