Roman Days of Centum Cellas 2026

· Belmonte

Historical reenactment that takes visitors back to the Roman Empire era beside the enigmatic Centum Cellas tower in Belmonte. Five days of Roman market, workshops, theatre, music and combat demonstrations.

From 4 to 8 June 2026, Colmeal da Torre in Belmonte hosts the first edition of the Dias Romanvs de Centum Cellas, a major historical reenactment organised by the Municipality of Belmonte that invites visitors of all ages to travel back to the Roman Empire. The setting could not be more impressive: the millennial tower of Centum Cellas, a national monument from the 1st century AD that stands on the old Roman road linking Augusta Emerita (Mérida) to Bracara Augusta (Braga).

For five days, the venue is transformed into a true Roman vicus, with a themed market open from 10:00 to 22:00, full of artisan stalls, traders, and food and drink inspired by Antiquity. Alongside the market, there are workshops dedicated to military arts, coin minting, Roman writing, cooking and mosaics, allowing visitors to actively participate in the reenactment.

The artistic programme features highlights such as the play “Os Augúrios” and a snake-charming show on Thursday; the theatre and music performance “Caminhos que não marcham em linha” on Friday; the dance performance “ComPasso em Centum Cellas” and the theatre and fire show “O Desígnio dos Deuses” on Saturday. Sunday is family-oriented, with the children's workshop “Vamos ser legionários!” (ages 4-10) and the senior theatre piece “A grande tragédia fiscal”.

The event closes on Monday, 8 June, with an informal talk about Roman plants and a sunset guided visit to Centum Cellas, one of the most enigmatic and photogenic landmarks in inland Portugal. Admission is free, although booking is recommended for some activities via [email protected].
