Portas do Sol Festival 2026 – Street Arts in Covilhã
The Portas do Sol Festival returns to Covilhã's historic centre from 2 to 4 July 2026, with 44 free activities. Contemporary circus, dance, concerts and art installations take over the city.
The Portas do Sol Festival returns to the historic centre of Covilhã from 2 to 4 July 2026, in a new edition that confirms the event as one of the leading references for street arts in Portugal. Organised by ASTA – Association of Theatre and Other Arts, the festival offers a programme of 44 completely free activities.
The line-up brings together more than forty proposals that cross languages, audiences and geographies, including concerts, contemporary circus, aerial dance, acrobatics, juggling, art installations and workshops. The activities are spread across several emblematic spaces in the historic centre, such as Praça do Município, Largo Dr. Valério de Morais, Largo da Igreja de Santa Maria, the area behind the Town Hall and the Portas do Sol viewpoint.
With a budget of 85,000 euros — the largest since the festival's creation — this edition focuses on strengthening its connection to the community. Covilhã's museums and the Municipal Archive are challenged to leave their usual spaces and get closer to the population, bringing culture into public space. An artistic map of the historic centre guides visitors through the various interventions.
One of the highlights is the Sunset event at the Portas do Sol viewpoint, between 7:30 and 9:00 PM, with a DJ set and stunning views over the city and the Serra da Estrela. The festival also keeps the traditional Porta Nascente – Arts Fair, gathering artisans, designers and independent creators at the viewpoint.
Designed for all ages, Portas do Sol includes programming dedicated to children, making it an ideal event for families. The combination of quality art, free access and the unique setting of Covilhã's historic centre makes this festival one of the best reasons to visit the city in early July.
Visitors can take advantage of their stay to discover the city's urban art murals, the heritage linked to the wool industry and the nearby Serra da Estrela. The Portas do Sol Festival is a vibrant celebration of creativity that turns the streets of Covilhã into a great open-air stage.
