Óbidos Medieval Market 2026 — A Aleivosa: Love and Ruin
The walled town of Óbidos travels back in time from 16 to 26 July 2026 for the 24th edition of its famous Medieval Market. This year's theme, 'A Aleivosa: Love and Ruin', draws on the story of Leonor Teles and King Fernando I. Knights, jugglers, falconers and medieval taverns fill the streets, with the return of the spectacular 'Assault on the Castle'.
The Óbidos Medieval Market returns in 2026 for its 24th edition, transforming one of Portugal's most beautiful villages into an authentic journey back to the heart of the Middle Ages. From 16 to 26 July, the narrow cobbled streets of the walled town come alive with colour, fire, music and history.
The 2026 edition unfolds around the theme 'A Aleivosa: Love and Ruin', inspired by the controversial figure of Leonor Teles and her marriage to King Fernando I, set within the Portuguese court of the 14th century. Every aspect of the staging — costumes, gastronomy, performances and scenography — recreates the atmosphere of this dramatic chapter of national history.
Among the highlights is the return of the spectacular 'Assault on the Castle', performed nightly at the end of the evening within the castle walls. This large-scale production involves around 50 performers, blending action, light and drama into a uniquely immersive experience.
Throughout the festival, visitors encounter knights, merchants, jugglers, falconers, storytellers and dozens of medieval taverns serving period food and drink. There are tournaments, dances, live music on several stages, and displays of weapons, tools and animals.
Families with children will discover 'Medieval dos Petizes', an exclusive themed space with activities designed for younger visitors, recreating the daily life and games of the Middle Ages.
The market is open Monday to Thursday from 17:00 to 00:00, Fridays from 17:00 to 02:00, Saturdays from 11:00 to 02:00, and Sundays from 11:00 to 00:00. Tickets range from €8 to €10 for adults and €5 for children aged 6 to 12, with free entry for children up to 5.
Considered one of the largest medieval events on the Iberian Peninsula, the Óbidos Medieval Market draws thousands of visitors each year. Located about an hour north of Lisbon, Óbidos is the perfect backdrop for this celebration — booking tickets in advance is strongly recommended due to high demand.
