Vila Nova de Milfontes hosts the 4th edition of the Marine Forests Festival from May 13 to 22, 2026, a unique event that combines science, nature, and environmental education along one of the most pristine stretches of the Portuguese coastline.
Over ten days, the festival offers a diverse programme of initiatives and experiences, with moments dedicated to raising awareness about marine conservation, sharing scientific knowledge, and actively discovering the coastal and marine environment. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Costa Vicentina and the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park, the event invites visitors of all ages to explore the richness of the region's marine ecosystems.
Organised by CCMAR – Centre of Marine Sciences at the University of Algarve, in partnership with Colégio Nossa Senhora da Graça, the Municipality of Odemira, and the University of Algarve, the festival is supported by various entities linked to marine research and environmental conservation.
Previous editions, held in Sagres and Vila do Bispo, were widely praised for their innovative approach to bringing the public closer to marine science through activities such as diving, dolphin watching, coastal walks, marine biology workshops, and talks by renowned researchers.
For this edition, the programme is expected to include similar activities adapted to the unique setting of Vila Nova de Milfontes, with its privileged location beside the Mira River estuary and the beaches of the Alentejo Coast. The detailed programme will be announced shortly by the organisers.
Entry to the festival is traditionally free for most activities, although some experiences may require prior registration due to limited capacity. Vila Nova de Milfontes, with its range of accommodation, restaurants, and stunning beaches, provides the perfect setting to combine festival attendance with a seaside holiday.
