São Tiago Maior Festival in Edral

· Vinhais

Traditional village festival honoring São Tiago Maior, patron saint of Edral (Frades), in the municipality of Vinhais. A religious and cultural celebration featuring a procession, solemn mass, music and conviviality between residents and visitors.

The Festa de São Tiago Maior in Edral, in the parish of Frades, is one of the most anticipated summer celebrations in the municipality of Vinhais, in the heart of Trás-os-Montes. Held on July 25th, the festival honors the village's patron saint in an event that combines religious devotion, age-old traditions, and community gathering.

The traditional program of these Trás-os-Montes festivals includes a solemn mass in honor of São Tiago, followed by the traditional procession through the village streets, with the saint's litter accompanied by the faithful and brass bands. Flowered arches, decorated streets, and the ringing of bells create a unique festive atmosphere.

Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy the typical local gastronomy of Trás-os-Montes — highlights include Vinhais smoked meats (PGI), Maronesa beef, traditional cakes, and regional wines. The evening street parties, with Portuguese folk music, marches, and dances, extend into the early hours, livening up the small rural village.

Edral is located in a rural area of extraordinary scenic beauty, near the Montesinho Natural Park, one of Portugal's most preserved inland territories. The festival is an excellent opportunity to discover the authentic Trás-os-Montes, meet its hospitable people, and immerse yourself in traditions that resist the passage of time.

Visitors to Edral in July should also take the chance to explore neighboring villages, hike in the Montesinho Natural Park, and try the unique flavors of Trás-os-Montes cuisine. The festival is free and open to all.
