The Almada Theatre Festival (Festival de Almada) is one of the most emblematic performing arts events in Portugal, returning in 2026 for its edition running from 4 to 18 July. Organised by the Companhia de Teatro de Almada, the festival transforms the city into a vibrant stage for theatre, dance and performance, with a programme spread across various venues in Almada and Lisbon.
The 2026 edition presents around 19 shows, combining international and national productions, revisiting celebrated playwrights such as Chekhov, Ionesco, Beckett and Nelson Rodrigues. The invited creators include some of the most prominent names on the international arts scene, including Peter Stein, Christoph Marthaler, Milo Rau, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Josef Nadj, Israel Galván and Mohamed El Khatib.
Performances take place across several stages, including the Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite, the Escola D. António da Costa, the Academia Almadense, the Fórum Municipal Romeu Correia, as well as the Teatro Variedades and the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon. This geographic spread reflects the festival's spirit of bringing art to different audiences and communities.
Beyond the performances, the festival offers colloquia with creators, social gatherings and the traditional esplanade at the Escola D. António da Costa, which serves as a meeting point with free concerts and a restaurant open to all. This festive and democratic atmosphere sets the Almada Festival apart from other events of its kind.
For visitors exploring the south bank of the Tagus, the festival is a unique opportunity to combine top-level culture with the discovery of Almada, just minutes from Lisbon. Individual tickets are available for various shows, and it is advisable to consult the official programme to confirm schedules and availability. An unmissable experience for lovers of the performing arts in the heart of the Portuguese summer.
