On 29 August, Zambujeira do Mar hosts its traditional Annual Fair, filling the village streets with stalls, vendors and regional products. It is one of the historic fairs of the Odemira municipality and a living portrait of traditional Alentejo commerce.
On 29 August, Zambujeira do Mar hosts its Annual Fair, one of the traditional fairs of the Odemira municipality, officially listed in the municipal calendar of fairs and markets. Closing out the liveliest month of the year in this Costa Vicentina village, the fair turns the streets and squares into a genuine open-air market, bringing together stallholders, local producers, residents and the many holidaymakers still enjoying the last days of August on the Alentejo coast.
As tradition dictates at Alentejo annual fairs, you will find a bit of everything here: clothing and footwear, household goods, tools and farming utensils, handicrafts, toys and, of course, the flavours of the region — cheeses, cured sausages, honey, Alentejo bread, traditional sweets and seasonal fruit. It is also a social gathering par excellence, where families from the parish of São Teotónio and neighbouring villages come together in a convivial atmosphere that has endured for generations.
For visitors, the Annual Fair is an excellent opportunity to discover the most authentic side of Zambujeira do Mar, beyond the beaches that made it famous. Just a few steps from the bustle of the fair you will find Zambujeira beach, ranked among the most beautiful in Portugal, the viewpoint over the Atlantic and the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar on top of the cliff. Combining a morning at the fair with an afternoon on the beach and a dinner of fresh fish or goose barnacles at one of the village restaurants makes a perfect end-of-summer day out.
The fair runs throughout the day and entry is free. Arriving in the morning is recommended, when the fair is at its busiest and the heat is more bearable, and bear in mind that parking in the village is limited at this time of year. Travellers walking the Rota Vicentina or road-tripping along the Southwest Alentejo coast will find this a stop full of colour, flavour and authenticity.
