Vaca das Cordas 2026

· Ponte de Lima

A centuries-old tradition returns to the historic center of Ponte de Lima on June 3rd. A bull led by ropes parades through the medieval streets and circles the parish church three times in a ritual rooted in history.

The Vaca das Cordas (Cow of the Ropes) is one of the oldest and most emblematic traditions of Ponte de Lima, returning to the town's historic center on June 3rd, 2026, at 6:00 PM. This centuries-old ritual, with origins dating back to medieval Corpus Christi celebrations, draws thousands of spectators every year.

For the 2026 edition, the chosen bull weighs nearly half a ton and comes from the renowned Ganadaria Santos Silva in Montemor-o-Velho, in the Coimbra district. Guided by long ropes held by dozens of local men, the animal parades through the main streets of the historic center, crosses the iconic Roman Bridge, and circles the parish church three times in a symbolic ritual, ending its journey on the sandy banks of the Lima River.

More than a spectacle, the Vaca das Cordas is a profound cultural expression, classified as intangible heritage of the region. It unites generations of locals and attracts visitors from all over the country and abroad, fascinated by the energy, the traditional music, and the festive atmosphere that fills the narrow streets of the historic town.

Visitors to Ponte de Lima on this date can also explore the town's rich architectural heritage — considered the oldest in Portugal — and sample the local cuisine, including arroz de sarrabulho, vinho verde wine, and traditional convent sweets. It's recommended to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot along the route and to choose safe vantage points away from the narrow passages where the bull moves at higher speeds.

The event is free and organized by the Municipality of Ponte de Lima in partnership with local associations. It's a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the most authentic traditions of the Alto Minho region.
