Ultra Skyrunning Madeira 2026

· Santana

The 12th edition of Ultra Skyrunning Madeira returns to Santana on June 12-13, 2026, with five trail running races across the island's highest peaks. One of the world's premier skyrunning events, part of the Skyrunner® World Series.

The Ultra Skyrunning Madeira (USM) 2026 reaches its 12th edition on June 12-13, transforming the village of Santana, in northern Madeira Island, into the world capital of skyrunning. Recognised as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve since 2011, Santana provides the perfect backdrop for one of the most spectacular trail running events in the world.

The organisers offer five distinct races, adapted to different experience levels and physical abilities. The flagship event is the Madeira Sky Race (MSR), integrated into the prestigious Skyrunner® World Series by the International Skyrunning Federation. The technical and demanding course runs "from the sea to the summit," climbing to Pico Ruivo (1,861 m), the highest point on the island. Participants navigate technical trails through the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

For vertical specialists, the Santana Vertical Kilometer (SVK) is part of the Vertical Kilometer® World Circuit and attracts top international talent. The Norte Sky Race (FSR), Santana Sky Race (SSR), and Santana Sky Speed (SSS) offer more accessible routes while maintaining the scenic beauty and technical challenge that define the event.

Kids' races, divided into five age categories (up to 14 years old), ensure a family-friendly atmosphere and safely introduce younger athletes to trail running. The event annually attracts thousands of athletes and supporters from dozens of countries, significantly boosting Santana's local economy during this race weekend.

Beyond the competition, visitors can explore Santana's famous traditional A-frame thatched houses with their colourful straw roofs, and savour regional gastronomy. Online registrations are open, and the event once again promises a unique sporting spectacle set against one of Europe's most breathtaking natural landscapes.
