Transhumance and Shepherds' Festival
One of Serra da Estrela's most authentic traditions, the Transhumance Festival celebrates the ancient ascent of flocks to high-altitude pastures. Visitors can join shepherds and thousands of animals on a memorable climb from Seia to Sabugueiro.
The Transhumance and Shepherds' Festival is one of the most genuine and emblematic celebrations of the Serra da Estrela, recreating the ancient ritual of moving flocks up to high-altitude pastures at the start of summer. In 2026, the festival runs from 21 June to 4 July, extending into the first days of July with a series of events honouring the pastoral way of life and the region's mountain culture.
The highlight is the transhumance ascent, in which shepherds, herding dogs and more than three thousand head of livestock travel some 11 kilometres from the centre of Seia up to the mountain village of Sabugueiro, the highest in Portugal. Visitors, tourists and residents are invited to accompany this unique procession, a walk that crosses the stunning landscapes of the mountains and offers a close-up experience of a tradition with centuries of history.
Throughout the festival days, the programme also features traditional gastronomy showcases, with the famous Serra da Estrela PDO cheese taking centre stage, arts and crafts demonstrations, folk music, street entertainment and activities linked to shepherding and rural life. It is a rare opportunity to discover the region's identity, taste local products and meet the people who keep these age-old practices alive.
For visitors, the festival is the perfect occasion to discover Seia and the Serra da Estrela Natural Park in a festive and welcoming atmosphere. Comfortable footwear is recommended for those wishing to follow the flocks' ascent, and visitors should check the detailed programme and timings with the organisers in advance, as some activities have specific starting points and times.
