The Journey of Wool Continues... But Where To?

· Mirandela

Children's activity at the Sarmento Pimentel Municipal Library in Mirandela, dedicated to the traditional wool craft of Trás-os-Montes. A cultural and creative journey through the region's ancestral knowledge.

The Sarmento Pimentel Municipal Library in Mirandela hosts another session of "The Journey of Wool Continues... But Where To?" on 30 June 2026, a cultural initiative promoted by the Municipality of Mirandela that invites children and families to rediscover one of the most emblematic traditions of inland Trás-os-Montes: the craft of wool.

This educational and playful project dives into the pastoral roots of the region, exploring the full journey of wool — from sheep shearing through washing, carding, spinning and natural dyeing, all the way to the creation of artisanal pieces that for centuries clothed and warmed the people of Northeast Trás-os-Montes. With a dynamic and interactive approach, the session continues the exploration started in previous editions, now extending its view towards the future of this ancient material.

Participants will have the chance to discover stories, legends and traditional tales linked to the pastoral world, as well as take part in small hands-on workshops where they can touch, handle and transform wool. The activity is especially designed for younger audiences, but it also invites grandparents and parents to share memories and knowledge with new generations.

Mirandela, the capital of the Terra Quente Transmontana, has invested strongly in valuing its intangible heritage, and initiatives like this reinforce the role of the municipal library as a living space for culture, reading and citizenship. The session offers free entry and takes place at the Sarmento Pimentel Municipal Library, in the city's historic centre.

For visitors travelling in the region at the end of June, this is an excellent cultural programme to add to an itinerary that can include the Tua River, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, the local gastronomy — including the famous Mirandela alheira sausage — and walks along the flowering banks that characterise the Trás-os-Montes summer.
