Terra Sol Liberdade – 30 Years of the Jorge Vieira Museum
Exhibition celebrating 30 years of sculptor Jorge Vieira's legacy, on display at the Centro de Artes – Museu Leopoldo de Almeida in Caldas da Rainha, from 9 May to 27 June 2026. Free admission.
The Centro de Artes – Museu Leopoldo de Almeida in Caldas da Rainha hosts until 27 June 2026 the exhibition "Terra Sol Liberdade – 30 Years of the Jorge Vieira Museum", a tribute to the sculptor born in Beja and a key reference in 20th-century Portuguese art.
The exhibition marks three decades since the founding of the Jorge Vieira Museum (in Beja) and offers a contemporary reading of his work through three words that ran through the artist's life and creation: Earth, Sun and Freedom. The exhibition path combines pieces from the sculptor's collection with contemporary works that establish a dialogue with his legacy.
The project originated in an artistic residency held in Beringel, a land of clay and brick, where invited artists worked for ten days alongside local masters António Mestre and José Manuel Parreira. The resulting clay works are now shown in parallel with the Jorge Vieira collection.
Participating artists include Bárbara Rodrigues, Cláudia Guerreiro, Heitor Figueiredo, Marta Castelo, Rita Carreira and others, along with two award-winning students from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. Artist Noémia Cruz, who worked directly with Jorge Vieira, is also represented in the show.
Visiting the exhibition is a unique opportunity to explore Jorge Vieira's sculptural universe in one of the most important museum spaces in the Oeste region. The Centro de Artes of Caldas da Rainha is itself a cultural landmark of the city, complementing the visit with other collections and temporary exhibitions. Admission is free.
