Teixeira de Pascoaes Estate — Exhibition at Lugar Saudade
Amarante's Casa da Cadeia hosts a long-running exhibition devoted to poet Teixeira de Pascoaes, bringing together objects, documents, photographs and furniture from his estate. A window into the intimacy and creative world of one of Portuguese literature's greatest figures, open throughout July 2026.
Throughout July 2026, visitors to Amarante can explore one of the town's most significant cultural legacies at Lugar Saudade – Teixeira de Pascoaes, housed in the former Casa da Cadeia (old jailhouse). The exhibition gathers the estate of poet Teixeira de Pascoaes (1877–1952), a leading figure of the Saudosismo movement and the Portuguese Renaissance, acquired by the Municipality of Amarante.
The display presents a representative collection of personal objects, documents, manuscripts, photographs, artworks and furniture that belonged to the writer. More than a set of artefacts, it is an invitation to enter the intimacy, thought and creative universe of an author deeply tied to the Marão mountains and the Amarante region, where he lived at the Quinta de Pascoaes in Gatão.
The route helps visitors understand the genesis of Pascoaes' poetic and philosophical work — including titles such as Marânus and Regresso ao Paraíso — and how melancholy, memory and nature shaped his writing. The curatorial approach uses the concept of "saudade" as a reading key, giving the cultural space its very name.
Lugar Saudade thus establishes itself as a new cultural hub in Amarante, complementing the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Municipal Museum and reinforcing the town's status as a literary and cultural travel destination in northern Portugal. The visit is especially recommended for lovers of literature, history and writers' heritage.
The exhibition fits naturally into a wider tour of the town, which might include the Church and Monastery of São Gonçalo, the São Gonçalo bridge over the River Tâmega, and the historic riverside cafés. Located on Alameda Teixeira de Pascoaes, just a few minutes' walk from the centre, it is a calm and rewarding stop on a summer visit to Amarante.
Visitors are advised to confirm opening hours in advance with the Municipality of Amarante. The exhibition has been running since August 2025 and continues for several years, remaining fully open throughout July 2026.
