Summer Solstice Festival 2026 in Torre de Moncorvo
The Summer Solstice Festival returns to Torre de Moncorvo on June 19 and 20, 2026, celebrating the arrival of summer. Two intense days of workshops, astronomy sessions, concerts, performances and ancestral re-enactments for the whole family.
The Summer Solstice Festival returns to Torre de Moncorvo on 19 and 20 June 2026, turning the historic centre of this medieval village in the Douro Internacional region into a vibrant stage dedicated to celebrating the summer solstice — the shortest night and longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
Created in 2015 by the Municipality of Torre de Moncorvo as part of its environment and science month, the festival has grown into one of the most original cultural events in northeastern Portugal. The programme blends tradition and contemporary culture: re-enactments of ancient pagan and Christian rituals linked to Saint John, scientific and creative workshops, astronomy sessions to observe the summer sky, yoga classes, reiki sessions, open-air concerts and street performances.
Families are at the heart of the festival. Children dressed as fairies, elves and wizards lead an enchanted parade through Moncorvo's historic streets, while adults can join stress-management workshops, craft ateliers and tastings of regional products such as the famous sugared almonds — Torre de Moncorvo's sweetest signature.
As night falls, traditional bonfires light up the old town and give way to concerts blending Portuguese popular music, world music and contemporary folk. The medieval castle, the Mother Church and the viewpoints overlooking the Sabor river valley provide the backdrop for unforgettable moments beneath the starry skies of Trás-os-Montes — one of the regions with the lowest light pollution in Portugal.
The Summer Solstice Festival is free and open to all. Visitors can also explore the Iron and Moncorvo Region Museum, hike the trails of the Serra do Reboredo and discover the river beaches of the Sabor. An unmissable weekend for travellers seeking culture, nature and tradition in the heart of the Douro Internacional.
