St. John's Festival (São João) Porto 2026

· Porto

Porto's biggest street party returns on the night of 23-24 June 2026, with colourful plastic hammers, basil pots, grilled sardines, paper hot-air balloons and the traditional midnight fireworks over the Douro River.

Porto's São João Festival 2026 is celebrated on the night of 23-24 June and is considered one of the largest street parties in Europe. 24 June is a municipal holiday in Porto, honouring Saint John the Baptist, the city's patron saint.

Throughout the night, the city lives a unique and contagious atmosphere. The streets fill with locals and visitors armed with colourful plastic hammers and leeks, which they use to playfully bonk each other on the head — a peculiar tradition that replaced the old custom of offering basil pots. The smell of grilled sardines, caldo verde soup and broa cornbread dominates the alleys of the historic centre, Ribeira and Fontainhas.

The highlight of the night is the magnificent fireworks display at midnight, launched over the Douro River, best viewed from Ribeira, Vila Nova de Gaia, Jardim do Morro or Palácio de Cristal. Hundreds of São João paper hot-air balloons (small paper balloons with a flame) light up the sky throughout the night.

The official programme also includes the Rusgas e Arruadas — traditional parades of folk groups from the city's neighbourhoods — on 21 June, and the famous Rabelo Boats Regatta on the morning of 24 June, with the traditional vessels that once transported Port Wine racing between Gaia and the Douro estuary.

Festive spaces operate for several weeks at locations such as Alameda das Fontainhas, Largo do Calém, Avenida D. Carlos I and Mercado do Bolhão. Free concerts on stages spread across the city (Aliados, Palácio de Cristal Gardens, Foz, Largo do Amor de Perdição) liven up the night until dawn. An absolutely unmissable experience.
