Scientific Meeting: Whaling in the Atlantic

· Sesimbra

Sesimbra's Coastal Cultural Centre hosts a scientific meeting dedicated to the history of whaling in the Atlantic. Researchers and specialists gather to explore the region's maritime past and the ancestral bond between Sesimbra and the sea.

On 22 July 2026, Sesimbra's Coastal Cultural Centre (Centro Cultural Costeiro) hosts the scientific meeting "Whaling in the Atlantic", an initiative of the Municipality of Sesimbra spotlighting one of the most fascinating chapters of Atlantic maritime history. Throughout the day, researchers, historians and coastal heritage specialists share knowledge about the whaling activity that for centuries shaped fishing communities along the Portuguese and Atlantic coastline.

Sesimbra, with its identity deeply rooted in the sea and fishing, is the ideal setting for this reflection. The Coastal Cultural Centre, a space dedicated to studying and preserving the town's maritime identity, provides a privileged backdrop for a programme that blends history, science, marine biology and community memory.

The meeting addresses themes such as traditional whaling techniques, whalers' routes across the Atlantic, the economic and social impact of the activity, as well as the transition towards a contemporary culture of ocean and cetacean conservation. It is an opportunity to understand how the whaling past connects with today's challenges of protecting marine life.

For visitors interested in culture, history and natural heritage, this meeting offers a unique window into Portugal's coastal legacy. Alongside the scientific sessions, a trip to Sesimbra invites discovery of its medieval castle, crystal-clear beaches and renowned fresh fish and seafood cuisine.

Admission is subject to the Municipality of Sesimbra's programme. Visitors are advised to confirm times and registration with the organisers through the official cultural agenda.
