Science on the Street 2026 - International Festival of Science and Art
The international festival that transforms Estremoz into a stage of creativity and innovation returns on June 20, 2026, with the theme "Sustainability". Shows, experiences, and street art dialogue with science.
Science on the Street (Ciência na Rua) returns to Estremoz on June 20, 2026, for another edition of the International Festival of Science and Art, transforming the city's streets into a true open-air stage of creativity, innovation, and discovery. The 2026 edition focuses on the theme of Sustainability, challenging artists and audiences alike to reflect on the future through the dialogue between art and science.
Organized by the Estremoz Ciência Viva Centre, with artistic direction by PIA – Projectos de Intervenção Artística, this unique festival combines performance, street art, and scientific outreach in a surprising way. Throughout the day, the historic streets of Estremoz fill with shows, interactive experiences, and artistic installations that invite the public to look at science from a completely different perspective.
The festival has been recognized with the EFFE Quality Seal (Europe for Festivals | Festivals for Europe), awarded by the European Festivals Association, distinguishing it as one of Europe's leading festivals. This certification reflects Science on the Street's commitment to artistic excellence, community engagement, and the international dimension of the event.
The program includes proposals selected through an international open call, bringing together national and international artists working in street performing arts. The projects explore sustainability through multiple artistic languages — contemporary circus, street theater, dance, performance, installation, and participatory interventions — always in dialogue with current scientific themes.
For visitors and tourists, this is an ideal time to discover Estremoz, one of the Alentejo's jewels known for its marble architecture, medieval castle, and culinary traditions. The festival is free and suitable for all ages, providing an excellent opportunity for families, the curious, and culture lovers. Combine your visit with a stay in the region to also explore the famous Alentejo wines and the surrounding historical heritage.
