Sardine Festival 'Ruído à Portuguesa' at Mértola Festival
The traditional sardine feast of the Mértola Village Festival returns on June 25, 2026 with performances by António Gonçalves and Ruído à Portuguesa. A night of music, grilled sardines and conviviality on the banks of the Guadiana River.
The closing of the Festas da Vila de Mértola 2026 takes place in true Alentejo style, with the traditional Sardinhada Ruído à Portuguesa, scheduled for June 25 starting at 7:00 PM. The event combines popular Portuguese gastronomy with the best of roots music, in a lively and relaxed atmosphere by the Guadiana River.
The headliner of the night is António Gonçalves, a fado singer and performer of Portuguese popular music, known for songs celebrating the traditions and daily life of inland villages. The performance is preceded and accompanied by the group Ruído à Portuguesa, which gives its name to this gastronomic-musical format that has become a trademark of several popular festivals in the Alentejo.
The sardinhada is one of the deepest-rooted traditions of the Saint John and Saint Anthony festivities in Portugal, and in Mértola it takes on particular features: sardines are grilled outdoors, served with Alentejo bread, roasted peppers, boiled potatoes and a glass of regional wine. Prices are affordable and the atmosphere is welcoming to families, friends and visitors.
This is an excellent opportunity to experience Alentejo hospitality in its most authentic state. The night culminates with live music, traditional dances and a gathering that extends into the early hours of the morning in the streets and squares of the historic village.
Mértola, classified as a Museum Village, offers in June a unique setting: long days, mild temperatures and the spectacular sunset over the Guadiana River. Take advantage of the trip to visit the Castle, the Main Church (former mosque), the Islamic Museum and take a boat ride along the river.
The event is free; food and drinks are paid for on site at affordable prices. It is recommended to book accommodation in advance, given the high influx of visitors during the festivities.
