São Vicente Festivities 2026

· São Vicente

The largest annual festivities in the municipality of São Vicente return from 22 to 30 August 2026. Nine days of concerts by regional, national and international artists, DJs until dawn, a 4x4 Trial competition and the traditional procession honouring the patron saint.

The Festas de São Vicente are one of the largest and most popular street festivals on Madeira island, held every year in the week preceding the last Sunday of August in the village of São Vicente, on the island's north coast. In 2026 the festivities run from 22 to 30 August, turning the village streets into a stage of music, colour and entertainment that draws thousands of Madeirans and visitors from all over.

The programme is vast and varied, combining religious, cultural, sporting and recreational activities. Highlights include concerts by regional, national and international artists performing a wide range of musical styles — from pop-rock to electronic music — and DJs keeping the streets of the village lively until the early hours. Another eagerly awaited moment is the 4x4 Trial competition, which gathers drivers and spectators for a display of off-road skill that is unique in Madeira's events calendar.

Religion remains at the heart of the festivities, with masses at the São Vicente Parish Church and the solemn procession in honour of the patron saint, which winds through the decorated streets of the village. Around this religious core grows the typical Madeiran arraial: food and drink stalls serving espetada (beef skewers), bolo do caco bread, poncha and local wine, along with folklore groups celebrating the traditions of the island's north.

For anyone visiting Madeira in late August, the São Vicente Festivities are the perfect opportunity to experience the island's north coast at its liveliest. The village, ranked among Portugal's most beautiful, offers plenty more to explore: the São Vicente Caves and Volcanism Centre, the little chapel of São Vicente carved into the rock at the river mouth, and dramatic landscapes squeezed between mountains and sea.

Entry to the festival is free. The detailed programme and official line-up poster are announced by the Municipality of São Vicente in the weeks leading up to the event, via the official website and the festival's social media channels. Booking accommodation early is recommended, as this is the busiest week of the year in the municipality.
