"São João das Arribas" Walking Trail

· Miranda do Douro

A free 8 km guided walk through the Douro Internacional Natural Park, passing by ancient hillforts and historic villages. Meeting at 8 AM at the Miranda do Douro Tourism Office, with a complimentary meal and return transport included.

On May 10, 2026, the Municipality of Miranda do Douro organises another edition of the «São João das Arribas» Walking Trail, a circular hike of approximately 8 kilometres through the stunning landscapes of the Douro Internacional Natural Park. The event is free and open to everyone, with a special invitation to families and nature walking enthusiasts.

The gathering point is at 8:00 AM at the Miranda do Douro Tourism Office, the starting point for a route with an estimated duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes and a difficulty level classified as low to moderate. The itinerary passes through sites of great heritage and natural interest, including Castro de Vale d'Águia, the village of Vale d'Águia, Aldeia Nova, and Castro de São João das Arribas — one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the region, with traces of human occupation dating back to the Iron Age.

Castro de São João das Arribas sits on a promontory above the Douro river cliffs, offering spectacular panoramic views over the canyon and Spanish territory on the opposite bank. It is a place of extraordinary scenic beauty, where the wild nature of the river cliffs combines with thousands of years of human history.

The organisation provides logistical support throughout the route and offers a complimentary meal to participants. Return transport to Miranda do Douro is provided by the municipality. The event is supported by the Douro Pula Canhada association and the Miranda do Douro Parish Council.

Registration is free and can be done at the Miranda do Douro Tourism Office or via email at [email protected]. Suitable walking footwear, sun protection, and water are recommended. This is a unique opportunity to discover one of Portugal's most impressive landscapes, in the heart of the International Douro region.
