Santos Populares 2026 in Vila Real de Santo António
Throughout June, Vila Real de Santo António, Monte Gordo, Vila Nova de Cacela and Manta Rota fill with traditional dances, parades and popular festivals honouring Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter. Free entry at all events.
The Santos Populares are one of the most beloved traditions in the Portuguese calendar, and in Vila Real de Santo António they come alive in the streets and squares of the municipality throughout June 2026. Co-organised by the Municipal Council and the Parish Councils, the festivities celebrate Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter with open-air dances, popular parades, food stalls and plenty of entertainment.
At Praça Marquês de Pombal, in VRSA, the popular dances start at 9:30 PM on June 12, 13, 16, 23, 24, 28 and 29. In Hortas (Bairro do Matadouro), the celebrations take place on June 16 and 30, also at 9:30 PM. In Monte Gordo, in the western zone of the Casino, there are festivities on June 12, 13, 22, 23, 24, 28 and 29, always starting at 10:00 PM. Celebrations in Vila Nova de Cacela (Largo Manuel Cabanas) take place on June 12, 23 and 28, at 10:00 PM, and Manta Rota (Rua da Nora) also joins the festivities.
The highlights are the popular parades (marchas). The Juvenile, Social, Cultural and Sports Association of Monte Gordo presents five parades: on June 12, 23 and 28 at 10:00 PM, in the western zone of the Monte Gordo Casino, and on June 13 and 27 at 10:00 PM, on Avenida da República, in front of the Customs building in VRSA. On June 22, at 10:00 PM, it is the turn of the SãoBrazArte Association and Costume Museum Club of São Brás de Alportel to parade at Praça Marquês de Pombal.
The festivals include dance music, food stalls with typical dishes such as grilled sardines, caldo verde and febras, regional wine, traditional desserts and the inevitable night-long entertainment. It is the perfect opportunity to feel the Algarvian popular spirit, dance to the sound of local bands and taste the best traditional food of the season. Entry is free at all events.
