Santos Populares 2026 in Sesimbra
Sesimbra celebrates the Popular Saints with street parties, parades, fado nights and traditional cuisine throughout June. Squares and streets are decorated to welcome locals and visitors in celebration.
The Santos Populares (Popular Saints) is one of Sesimbra's most beloved traditions and, in 2026, the festivities return to enliven the municipality with an intense programme throughout June. Organised by Sesimbra Town Hall in partnership with parish councils, the celebration honours Saint Anthony (13 June), Saint John (24 June) and Saint Peter (29 June), patron saint of fishermen — a particularly meaningful figure in a fishing town like Sesimbra.
For several weeks, the squares of the historic centre become open-air stages. Largo da Marinha, Largo 1.º de Dezembro, Rua dos Pescadores and Largo 5 de Outubro host popular parades (marchas), fado nights, traditional dances with live music and DJ sets. In Quinta do Conde, the traditional Snail Festival and popular parades at the parish square draw thousands of visitors.
Food is central to the festivities: charcoal-grilled sardines, seasoned snails, fresh fish stews from Sesimbra's coast, corn bread and regional wine. The streets are decorated with manjerico (sweet basil) plants, paper balloons and colourful arches handmade by the community.
It is the perfect occasion for visitors seeking authentic Portuguese culture in one of the most scenic towns of the Costa Azul. Combined with a day at California or Ouro beach, or a visit to Sesimbra Castle, this is an unmissable cultural experience in June. Entry to the arraiais is free and most activities run between 8:00 PM and 1:00 AM.
