Sanjoaninas 2026 - Angra do Heroísmo City Festival
The largest festival in the Azores archipelago returns to Angra do Heroísmo from 19 to 28 June 2026, under the theme 'Angra and Azoreanness'. Ten days of concerts, parades, tasquinhas, bullfighting and tradition in a UNESCO World Heritage city.
The Sanjoaninas 2026 are the largest festive event in the Azores archipelago and take place between 19 and 28 June 2026 in the historic centre of Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island. This edition is particularly significant as it is part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Autonomy of the Azores, under the official theme 'Angra and Azoreanness'.
For ten days, this UNESCO World Heritage city transforms into a vast open-air stage, with programming spread across the historic centre. The 2026 music lineup features prominent names such as Vizinhos, Matias Damásio and Mariza, alongside many other national and regional artists performing at various stages throughout the city.
The famous thematic parades are one of the trademarks of the Sanjoaninas, with parishes, associations and community groups marching through the streets with floats, music and dance. The traditional tasquinhas serve typical Azorean cuisine, including alcatra (slow-cooked beef), Holy Spirit soups, grilled linguiça, Ilha cheese and the traditional vinho de cheiro wine.
The Sanjoaninas Bullfighting Festival, one of the most important on the Iberian Peninsula, includes bullfights in the ring, rope bullfights through the streets, and bull runs. Running in parallel are the traditional Bodo de Leite parade, exhibitions, sporting initiatives and the unmissable Opening Parade.
The Sanjoaninas date back to the 16th century and have played a central role in Azorean culture, offering a unique opportunity to experience the traditions, hospitality and joy of the Terceira people. Entry to most events is free, although some activities such as bullfights and special concerts may require a ticket.
