Our Lady of the Castle Pilgrimage 2026

The Pilgrimage of Our Lady of the Castle is one of the most emblematic and moving events on the Arcos de Valdevez calendar. Held annually on Ascension Sunday — falling on May 14 in 2026 — this religious and popular celebration draws hundreds of devotees and visitors from across the Alto Minho region and beyond.

A tradition with more than two centuries of history, the event centres on the image of Our Lady of the Castle, which descends from her hilltop sanctuary into the historic town centre. The procession route is adorned with magnificent flower carpets, composed of carefully arranged flower petals by local residents and community groups, in a display of faith, artistry and devotion unparalleled in the region.

The streets of Arcos de Valdevez's historic centre transform into an open-air gallery of ephemeral art, with carpets stretching hundreds of metres, prepared throughout the night before by the community. The beauty and delicacy of the floral compositions leave all who witness them in awe.

Beyond the spiritual dimension, the pilgrimage includes a lively popular fair, traditional music, local gastronomy and an atmosphere of collective celebration and camaraderie.
