Our Lady of the Castle Pilgrimage 2026
The Our Lady of the Castle Pilgrimage returns to Arcos de Valdevez on May 14, filling the historic centre's streets with traditional flower carpets and culminating in a procession to the sanctuary. One of the most emblematic religious and cultural events in the region.
The Our Lady of the Castle Pilgrimage is one of the oldest and most beloved traditions in Arcos de Valdevez, bringing together hundreds of people in a celebration that combines religious devotion with unique cultural traditions. On May 14, 2026, the town's historic centre transforms into an open-air gallery, with the main streets covered in traditional flower carpets.
The flower carpets are the hallmark of this pilgrimage. Crafted with natural flower petals by residents of the various streets in the historic centre, these ephemeral works of art transform Arcos de Valdevez into a veritable open-air museum. Each street competes to present the most beautiful and elaborate carpet, creating a visual and aromatic spectacle that enchants visitors from across the region.
The celebration includes a solemn Eucharist and a procession that winds through the decorated streets up to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Castle, perched atop the hill overlooking the town. The procession route offers stunning panoramic views over the Vez river valley and the surrounding mountains of Peneda-Gerês National Park.
For tourists, this is a rare opportunity to experience an authentic Portuguese tradition, far from more commercial tourist circuits. The pilgrimage is also an excellent reason to discover Arcos de Valdevez, a town with rich historical heritage including the Paço de Giela, medieval bridges and riverside gardens along the River Vez.
Attendance is free and open to everyone. It is recommended to arrive early to appreciate the flower carpets at their finest, before the procession passes through. The town offers numerous restaurants where you can sample local gastronomy, with highlights including roast kid goat and arroz de sarrabulho, accompanied by the region's vinho verde.
