Our Lady of Pranto Pilgrimage in Salto

· Montalegre

On 15 August, the village of Salto in the municipality of Montalegre honours its patron saint with one of the Barroso region's largest pilgrimages. The grand flower-decked procession gathers the patron saints of all the parish villages and thousands of devotees and visitors.

Every year on 15 August, the village of Salto — the largest parish in the municipality of Montalegre — comes alive with the Pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora do Pranto (Our Lady of Pranto), one of the most important and best-attended religious festivals in the entire Barroso region.

The highlight is the grand procession on 15 August, when the statue of the Senhora do Pranto is carried through the streets in a long, flower-decked cortège, accompanied by the patron saints of every village in the parish. It is a spectacle of faith and colour that draws people from across the parish, from the neighbouring municipalities of Minho and Boticas, and many emigrants who return to their homeland at precisely this time of year.

Devotion to the Senhora do Pranto is deeply tied to the village's very identity: according to parish records from 1758, the name «Salto» (leap) stems from the legend that the statue of Our Lady «leapt» nearly a quarter of a league to the spot where the church stands today. The Church of Nossa Senhora do Pranto, a listed monument, is the spiritual heart of the celebration.

The festivities span several days: on 13 August a procession in honour of Our Lady of Fátima traditionally opens three days of great celebration, with open-air festivities, music, brass bands, fairground stalls and convivial gatherings on warm Barroso summer nights.

For anyone visiting the region in August, this romaria is a rare opportunity to witness the popular religiosity of Trás-os-Montes in its most genuine form — the flower-covered litters, the festival stewards, the votive promises, traditional dress and marching bands paint a living portrait of Barroso culture, a territory recognised by the FAO as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.

Salto lies about 30 minutes from Montalegre, between the Barroso and Cabreira mountains, near the Venda Nova reservoir. Make the most of your visit to explore neighbouring villages, taste the local smoked meats and PDO Barrosã beef, and discover the landscapes of Peneda-Gerês National Park. Entry is free and the festivities take over the whole village centre.
