Our Lady of Conception Pilgrimage (Romaria)
The traditional Our Lady of Conception Pilgrimage takes place every year on 15 August in Mértola. It is one of the oldest religious and popular celebrations in the municipality, blending devotion, music and community by the banks of the Guadiana River.
The Our Lady of Conception Pilgrimage (Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Conceição) is one of the most deeply rooted celebrations in Mértola's traditional calendar, held every year on 15 August at the height of the Alentejo summer. This romaria blends religious devotion with the festive spirit that defines the riverside communities of the Guadiana, drawing both locals and visitors eager to experience the living traditions of the Baixo Alentejo.
Throughout the day, the faithful take part in masses and processions in honour of Our Lady of Conception, in an atmosphere of heartfelt popular devotion. The historic streets of the village—with their whitewashed houses overlooking the river and the striking silhouette of the Moorish castle—provide the backdrop for one of the most memorable moments of the year.
Alongside its religious dimension, the pilgrimage is also a social and cultural gathering. Visitors will typically find traditional music, popular dances, stalls of regional sweets and Alentejo delicacies, turning the day into a genuine community festival. Guests can sample local specialities such as homemade bread, cheeses, honey and convent-style pastries that form part of Mértola's rich gastronomic heritage.
Classified as a Museum Village, Mértola offers far more than the pilgrimage itself: visitors can explore the archaeological centre, the Mother Church (a former mosque), the castle and breathtaking views over the Guadiana. The summer season is ideal for discovering the Islamic, Roman and medieval heritage that makes this village one of southern Portugal's most fascinating cultural destinations.
Visitors are advised to confirm the detailed programme with the Mértola Tourist Office or the Municipal Council, as the timings of religious celebrations and cultural activities may vary from year to year. Entry to the popular events is usually free of charge.
