Monsaraz Open Museum 2026 - Cultural Biennial
The Monsaraz Open Museum cultural biennial returns from July 14 to 21, 2026, transforming the medieval village into a living stage of music, theatre, dance and visual arts. Under the theme "I am indebted to the land", it celebrates Alentejo's heritage and cultural landscape.
Organised by the Municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz since 1986 and held biennially since 1998, the Monsaraz Open Museum (Monsaraz Museu Aberto) is one of the most distinctive cultural events in the Alentejo region. The 2026 edition runs from July 14 to 21, turning the cobbled streets, churches, squares and viewpoints of this medieval village into a true open-air living museum.
The theme chosen for this edition, "I am indebted to the land" (Eu sou devedor à terra), is inspired by the poem Alentejo, Alentejo by Master José Gato. It invites audiences to reflect on the deep relationship between the community and the unique cultural landscape that surrounds Monsaraz, classified as a National Monument since 1944.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 14 at 5:00 PM in the garden of Casa da Universidade. Over eight days, the multidisciplinary programme includes concerts, theatre and dance performances, visual arts exhibitions, lectures, talks with creators, workshops, performances and moments of Cante Alentejano, classified by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This biennial stands out for placing Monsaraz at the heart of contemporary Portuguese artistic creation, while also celebrating ancestral knowledge, traditions and the tangible and intangible heritage of the region. Artistic interventions take place in iconic locations such as the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa, the Igreja da Misericórdia, Monsaraz Castle and Largo D. Nuno Álvares Pereira.
