May Bullfighting Days - Praia da Vitória
Three consecutive days of bullfighting celebrations in Praia da Vitória, from May 28 to 30, 2026. The programme includes traditional rope bullfights and popular bullfighting manifestations through the town streets.
From May 28 to 30, 2026, Praia da Vitória hosts three consecutive days of bullfighting celebrations, offering visitors and residents a complete immersion into one of the most distinctive traditions of Terceira Island and the Azores.
The programme begins on May 28th with a traditional rope bullfight, followed on May 29th by a popular bullfighting manifestation, a more informal and participatory format that involves the entire community, and concludes on May 30th with another traditional rope bullfight. This three-day sequence provides a unique opportunity to experience different facets of Azorean bullfighting culture.
The tourada à corda is an exclusively Azorean tradition where the bull runs through the town streets controlled by a long rope held by a group of 'shepherds' (pastores). The spectacle transforms the streets and squares of Praia da Vitória into a natural arena, with spectators watching from balconies, street corners, and improvised barriers. The adrenaline is contagious and the festive atmosphere brings the whole community together.
The popular bullfighting manifestations, in turn, are more informal events celebrating the historical relationship between Azoreans and the bull. These manifestations often include music, local gastronomy, and socialising, becoming genuine popular festivals that attract people from across the island.
Visitors should note that these events take place in the town streets and that it is essential to follow safety guidelines. Events generally start in the late afternoon, around 5:00 PM, allowing tourists to explore the beaches and historic heritage of Praia da Vitória during the day before attending the bullfighting festivities in the evening. We also recommend sampling the local gastronomy, with highlights including the famous Terceira alcatra stew and the island's artisan cheeses.
