Marchas de São João 2026 in Melgaço

· Melgaço

The traditional Marchas Populares de São João return to liven up Melgaço, with a nighttime parade full of colour, music and tradition through the streets of the historic centre. Participating groups depart from Largo da Calçada and end the parade at Largo do Mercado Municipal.

The Marchas de São João are one of the most anticipated traditions in Melgaço's cultural calendar, returning to the streets of the village on 28 June 2026, starting at 9:00 PM. Promoted by the Municipality of Melgaço for over three decades, this nighttime parade celebrates the Popular Saints and the birth of Saint John, transforming the historic centre into a spectacle of colour, music and joy.

The parade begins at Largo da Calçada and winds through the heart of the village to Largo do Mercado Municipal, where the participating groups present their choreographies, costumes and flower-adorned arches before the audience. The marches bring together local associations that spend months preparing original lyrics, music, uniforms and props inspired by Minho's popular culture.

The 2026 edition features the participation of emblematic groups from the municipality, including Associação Noites Gaiteiras, Associação Casa do Povo de Melgaço, Marcha Infantil da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Melgaço and Associação Melgaço em Patins, along with the debut of "Os Sem Fronteiras", a group composed of members of the immigrant community living in Melgaço — a gesture of inclusion that reinforces the community spirit of the event.

Beyond the parade, the night of São João in Melgaço is lived in the streets, with arraial (street party), grilled sardines, corn bread, Alvarinho wine and folk music that lasts well into the night. It is a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the authenticity of Alto Minho traditions in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere.

The event has free admission and every year attracts hundreds of people, including residents, emigrants returning home for the season, and tourists taking advantage of their trip to northern Portugal to discover one of the region's most genuine festivities. Arriving early is recommended to secure a good spot along the route.
