Longueira Popular Marches Festival
A gathering of traditional popular marches in Longueira celebrating one of the most colourful and lively traditions of the Portuguese festive calendar. An evening of music, dance and traditional costumes in the heart of the Odemira municipality.
On 5 June 2026, the parish of Longueira/Almograve, in the municipality of Odemira, hosts the traditional Popular Marches Festival (Festival de Marchas Populares), a gathering that brings together marching groups from various Alentejo localities for a night of celebration, colour and tradition.
Popular marches are one of the most emblematic cultural expressions of June in Portugal, associated with the festivities of the Popular Saints (Santos Populares). Each group spends months preparing their costumes, arches, choreographies and songs in a collective effort that involves the entire community. In Longueira, this tradition is experienced with particular enthusiasm, transforming the village streets into a true open-air stage.
Visitors can expect a succession of colourful parades, with marchers displaying coordinated outfits, balloons, flowered arches and handcrafted props worked on throughout the year. Traditional music, performed live or playback, accompanies rehearsed choreographies that mix classic steps with original creations from each local association.
For visitors to the Alentejo coast, this is a privileged moment to discover the soul of the rural communities of the Odemira municipality. Longueira is just a few kilometres from the beaches of Almograve and Zambujeira do Mar, making it an excellent complement to a stay on the Costa Vicentina. Between marches, traditional snacks, grilled sardines, regional wine and traditional sweets are typically available at stalls set up by local associations.
Admission is free and the atmosphere is family-friendly, with people of all ages participating in the festivities. Arriving early is recommended to secure a good spot to watch the parades.
